I've been revisiting one of my favorite old 60's TV series lately, CLICK Voyage to the Bottom of Sea, and this episode in particular featuring a lovely mermaid and her angry mate reminded me of a very similar tale from the April 1979 issue of House of Mystery #267. So kick off those vacation shoes for a pair of flippers, we're treadin' in some dangerous waters as we get July 2023 rollin' out on a weird "...wave of mutilation..."

The Bloody Mermaid (PART ONE)
JMR kind of spoiled the surprise in the comments of the previous post, but today we begin a two-part minor masterpiece, Sanho Kim's epically eerie, Bloody Mermaid, which took up the entire issue of Ghostly Tales #91 in January of 1972. There certainly isn't enough mermaid horror in the world, and Sanho does an outstanding job with story pacing and atmosphere here. His stylized art technique seems to have improved quite a bit since House of Spiders '69 as well. I'll have the second half for you tomorrow-- so don't swim too far out to sea while waiting!

Dungeon Dweller of Horror House
Did you really think we were done with the Werewolf Hunter?! Oh, Hell no... in fact, this post may at first look like a single Prof story presentation, but it's actually TWO stories-- you just have to read the other one over at AEET when you're finished here! It's a wonderfully wild, WTF explosion of werewolf / vampire insanity, a fantastically flipped-out freakshow, --and Saul Rosen's art is as gorgeously intense as Lily's. From the August 1943 issue of Rangers Comics #12.

The Case of the Curses / From the Ocean Bottom
We've spent most of the month looking at scary 70's Skywald classics, and yes, I promised we'd finally make our way back to the fright-filled 50's-- and we are! But first, a quick stop into the early 60's. And note: this is merely a temporary detour because I was recently discussing post-code ACG "horror" with Nequam and thought, what the heck, how about an example of how a really good series like Forbidden Worlds seriously got the business from the contemptible comics code, i.e.: water it way down, remove all traces of swords (!!!) etc., --yet still manage to be "too gay" (???), --though ya know what-- also, actually strive (or struggle) to preserve OK art and remain entertaining in a doofy Ripley's Believe it or Screw It kind of way. The second two-page quickie tale feels a bit more at home here, so enjoy 'em or hate 'em, we'll be back in a few with more of the good stuff! From the August 1961 issue of a Forbidden Worlds #97.

Hoax / The Sea - Its Givings... and Takings!
I had a creepy chap write-in looking for a 70's comic he remembers as a lad but he couldn't recall any details other than it featured "a sea monster made out of barrels", and another story about a "hot mermaid." Pretty sure he's looking for the August 1975 issue of Monster Hunters #1, --and if this ain't the one I'll eat a hot mermaid! And fyi: the art on the hot mermaid tale is by Pete Morisi, many of you THOIA followers may be familiar with his awesome precode horror and crime work, so check the archives for more-- in fact, check out his Sewer Monsters tale HERE!
