Death from the Sea

Another Toby tale shambles forth from the ominous ocean, via the January 1953 issue of Tales of Horror #4. Pro team pals, Ben Brown and David Gantz amp up the atmospherics, with supernatural scare settings on SUPER SOAKER, as a cute blonde reporter on vacation finds herself in the middle of some rather sinister, seaside shenanigans! Also of interest: this tale was reworked for Road to Disaster (1982), one of the many wild Gredown horror reprint one-shot mags from Australia, and retitled, "The Slimy Haunt." As much as I'd love to see that, I'm actually much more curious about the cover story, "Supper in the Graveyard" (aka, "Michael's Last Supper"), you must see the last scan below-- I love that crazy cover!

The One That Got Away!

Our next not-so-fresh catch of the day as featured on THOIA's Monday Menu of the Macabre is from the January 1954 issue of Weird Mysteries #8. I guess if you never imagined the thought of fishing and horror mixing well, then reel in this slippery sucker and see what's biting! Art by Mortellaro

The Clutch of the Devil Fish!

Had ourselves a tough turkey decision to make this Thanksgiving, so now we're heading out for some seafood instead! Yep, things from the darkest depths make for a most delectable dish, but what if that thing from the deep wants to eat you back?!! A.C. Hollingsworth is in way over his head with this high seas horror hottie who's ringin' up the dinner bell on some modern day Ahabs that are literally beggin' for their just deserts and holiday desserts. From the October 1954 issue of Dark Mysteries #20. One more November helping up next...

Those Tentacles! / Slimes, Slogs and Glumps

The Charlton creeps are eruptin' from the deep today at THOIA, with a nice 'n icky drippy pair-up via the June 1975 issue of Ghostly Tales #106, as well as one from the November 1982 issue of Scary Tales #35 --and both illustrated by the terrifyingly terrific, Tom Sutton too! Things from the murky, lurky depths hold a special place in my heart-- maybe these slimy thingies will hold you in a special place-- in their stomaches! (2nd tale scans courtesy of Holden, thank you!)

Carniverous Cargo!

After last month's string of hellish hero horror tales, it's definitely time for a serious change of screamery! Say, how about a nice relaxing boat ride to clear our heads? I do believe some fresh sea air will do us all a world of gook-- err, I mean, good. Yes, that's exactly what I meant. From the May 1952 issue of Mister Mystery #5, and art by Tony Mortellaro.

The Poor Fish!

Boy, some Bill Everett fan I've turned out to be! Nearly 17 years into this #%@ blog, and I've never posted one of his most brutally bonkers tales of all time! There is of course another tale with the same title in the THOIA Archive (HERE!), but this one definitely deserves its own rightful time to shine! From the March 1953 issue of Suspense #28, and written by good 'ol Stan the (fisher)Man of course too! 'Nuff said...

The Vengeful Corpse

Some eerie Iger Shop illustrative touches highlight this haunted tale of horror from the deep (aka the Brian Barnes family tree.) I always find it odd to see the distinct Iger style featured in a publication that isn't Superior, or Ajax / Farrell, and this time it's Comic Media's nerve-wracking November 1952 issue of Horrific #2
