R.I.P. Lily Renée / Priestess of the Spider Death

We love reading the many great tributes online about eternally lovely, legendary golden era artist, Lily Renee, who passed away last week on August 24th at the age of 101. And we celebrate her incredible real life story HERE at THOIA as well as with another superbly illustrated tale from the February 1944 issue of Rangers Comics #15. Be sure to check out more of Lily's sexy / spooky art HERE in the Archive!

Murdered by a Ghost!

Time once again to scream out for an assist with some spooky supernatural shenanigans, and who better to aim that call at than the ever dynamic, Dr. Drew! I guess it's been awhile since we've seen him around these parts, (check the THOIA archive for more!), and this is absolutely one of his more lively "secret file" entries, loaded with both macabre and murderously madcap moments. Just don't be thrown off by the story title now, because (spoiler alert) it is Wednesday after all (hint hint!) From the October 1950 issue of Ranger Comics #55, and featuring the always amazing, Spirited art (get it?) of Jerry Grandenetti. [Also fyi: I actually already posted this story back in 2016 HERE, but it was the not so nicely recolored 80's Eclipse Mr. Monster reprint version and blech-- these things always bug me when I go through my backlog and see 'em, especially considering Melani Mandible is actually a rockin' redhead and not a blonde!]

The Curse of the Mandibles (Dr. Drew)

Who says Werewolf Wednesday has to be on a Wednesday? Derrrr, I only say this now because oops I forgot to hit publish on this post yesterday after uploading it! Distraction distractions!! And yeah, it's been a while since I featured a fun and frightening Dr. Drew horror mystery, so let's take a look at some more brilliant early work from Jerry Grandenetti (sorry, its been recolored by Eclipse in '85 though) and marvel at what some comic book legends could accomplish over half a century ago with just 8 pages to work with. Originally presented in the Oct '50 issue of Ranger Comics #55.

The Strange Case of the Absent Floor

Mr. Door Tree had some really nice wash covers by Jerry Grandenetti on display over at his Golden Age Comic Book Stories blog last Monday, so to compliment those posts I have one of my favorite Grandenetti creations for you today too--- From the Secret Files of Dr. Drew! Presented here in his very first appearance, Dr. Drew became an ongoing staple in Fiction House’s Rangers Comics, starting with issue #47 in 1949, where he subsequently stalked the unknown all the way to issue #60 until 1951.

Originally presented in the June 1949 issue of Ranger Comics #47
