The One That Got Away!

Our next not-so-fresh catch of the day as featured on THOIA's Monday Menu of the Macabre is from the January 1954 issue of Weird Mysteries #8. I guess if you never imagined the thought of fishing and horror mixing well, then reel in this slippery sucker and see what's biting! Art by Mortellaro

The Desert Castle

An interestingly simple little sci-fi horror premise from the September 1952 issue of Weird Tales of the Future #3: Two scientists working on a special generating fluid in an isolated desert castle accidentally spill the experiment on an ancient suit of armor, thus bringing it to violent life. Tony Mortellaro's koo-koo art works this one fast paced 'n full-tilt fun, and I totally adore the questioning climax with the bug eyed, bewildered scientist barely comprehending any of the possible outcomes to what he has just created. What have they done, indeed? What. Have. They. Done?!

Premonition!

Nope, it's not your imagination, --and you're not dreaming it! It's also not a premonition, even though it actually is, but what I mean to say is that we're looking at stories from the unbearably yellowed pages of the January 1954 issue of Weird Mysteries #8-- and yep, here's another one to make you pull your hair outta your head in macabre screaming madness! Hope everyone's having a splendid Friday the 13th too!

Mother's Advice

Here's another horrific heartbreaker from the October 1953 issue of Weird Mysteries #7. And like our previous post (which I seem to be saying a lot), this one has also been featured HERE before in the THOIA Archive, but only in a re-titled, black and white reprint form. I think you'll all agree, this story definitely benefits from a bit of the feminine flesh tones and good 'ol spurtin' red stuff. And be sure to fully enjoy that classic Bernard Baily cover illustration too!

Welcome to the Vampire Picnic!

Two'fer Tuesday with a deadly Vampire Double Creature Feature, and both from the September 1953 issue of Mister Mystery #13 too! And Tony Mortellaro returns with a scrumptious feast of food and fear to frazzle your digestive system, but first up it's Gerald Altman again as well with some really good, and weirdly not-so-good art, --but seriously, those vampire panels on page three are some of my all-time favorites ever-- ROWR!! Do I even need to mention the iconic Bernard Baily cover classic on this issue?! *GLUB!

Carniverous Cargo!

After last month's string of hellish hero horror tales, it's definitely time for a serious change of screamery! Say, how about a nice relaxing boat ride to clear our heads? I do believe some fresh sea air will do us all a world of gook-- err, I mean, good. Yes, that's exactly what I meant. From the May 1952 issue of Mister Mystery #5, and art by Tony Mortellaro.

First Come... First Served!

Here we go with the first post of 2020-- who'll be the first to comment? But more importantly-- who'll be the first to get that incredible M. Morte hairdo?! From the December 1952 issue of Weird Mysteries #2.

Full Moon!

It's time for the 'ol hitch-hiking / victim switcheroo, as Fanged Fridays at THOIA deliver a quickie monster tale from the August - September 1953 issue of Weird Mysteries #6. I don't know about you, but some of these hairy horror theme staples never seem to lose their appeal to entertain, no matter how many times we've been clawed to death by them-- although I'm sure there are some of you that find these types of stories to instead be quite draining! Illustrated by Tony Mortellero.

HAUNTED HORROR #26 / The Gossips!

HAUNTED HORROR #26 will be in stores on February 1st, and here's a FULL STORY PREVIEW of the nauseating tale that kicks off said issue! To decap--errrr-- recap: this is the second in a series of three "HORRORS OF IT ALL SPECIALS", each story chosen by me, so you know that guarantees it to be stamped with the highest retched gag rating possible! There's another great new illustration of Mr. Karswell as well by Happy Undertaker mastermind, Drazen Kozjan too! A serious, bonifide, DON'T MISS collection of creepers and jeepers for sure! But back to today's post, this is a disturbingly infamous Mortellaro story originally featured in the September 1953 issue of Mister Mystery #13 --it's been featured here at THOIA a few times as well over the years, (remember the archive?) I'll have another sample story for you in our next post too, so stay tombed!
