Suppressed Desire

We have a few more tales to go with our spotlight artist of the month, Bernie Krigstein, and it's time for a unique, psychological doozy from the September 1953 issue of Spellbound #17. Brian will likely comment on the amount of "talking head" panels, and yeah, he's right. But see how Bernie again mixes it up with interesting angles, close-ups, and cinematic style perspectives, not to mention going against the usual Atlas norm here, and delivering the typical big "twist reveal" in the middle of the second to last page-- NOT the final panel, as so often happens in these types of stories. But as we've seen with some of our previous Krigstein entries, --there is always another evil card up his sleeve still yet to play too! YIIIII! This would have made a great Roger Corman quickie starring Susan Cabot as Genevieve, Russ Tamblyn as Herbert, and Richard Johnson as Doctor Hargreaves.

Horror of Crag Island

We're stickin' close to the scary shoreline with a tale going waaaay way back to the March 1952 issue of Spellbound #1, --featuring supernatural slickness from joltin' Jay Scott Pike!

Shock Treatment!

I had a request for a shocking Dick Ayers electric chair tale a while back, and here it is after a few weeks of brain wrack trying to remember what and where it was published... from the October 1952 issue of Spellbound #8.

The White Bones

Ending out the month of September 2022 with a lurid Al Luster jungle jitter Atlas classic, from the September 1953 issue of Spellbound #17. Lots of great leering faces and terrible pointed teeth always populate a Luster tale, and let's see how the great white hunters fair in today's story, though what they're hunting for this time isn't exactly what you'd expect...

Step into My Coffin

Ahhh, the 'ol fake my death / bury me / then dig me up later so we can spend the insurance money routine has never sounded so good, as yessss, it's yet another in a long line of variations on said tacky tactic that once again fails miserably for the pea-brained person who stupidly thunk'd it up. Is that a spoiler? Nahhh, you longtime followers of this blog already know this rotten routine frontwards and back asswards, so do what the story title says, --just try not to run out of air too fast, ya dang ding-a-lings! From the March 1952 issue of Spellbound #1

Z-Z-Z-P!

A fast 'n fun Atlas weirdie for ya today, one that goes hand in boney hand with the man who lost his honkin' head via voodoo schmoodoo from last week, with great art from good 'ol Russ Heath, and from the October 1952 issue of Spellbound #8.

The Vampire's Bride

Everyone seems to love those vivacious vampire girls, so let's see how many more lovelies I can dig up --literally!-- before the month screeches to a halt, as they say. It's a funny little Dick Ayers quickie written by Stan Lee, and from the super shiver-inducin' September 1952 issue of Spellbound #7.

FYI: Fans of anthology horror will be happy to know that NBC.com has added all 7 episodes from the spooky fun, early 80's Darkroom TV series to their free online streaming service. Hosted by James Coburn and featuring tales of vampires, voodoo, killer toys, and the supernatural, this was an unfortunately short-lived series that many of us fondly remember watching as kids. Highlights include stories and scripts by the likes of Robert Bloch, Brian Clemens, Cornell Woolrich, and more! Check it out by CLICKING HERE!

Horror Story

We've screamed along to a lot of great Atlas tales over the last few months (and years) around here, and as you've likely figured out along the way, when you really need one to knock your socks off, you can always rely on bloodcurdlin' Bill Everett to deliver the spookiest of sock knockers! A terrifically eerie entry (and cover!) from my all-time favorite artist, and from the April 1952 issue of Spellbound #2.

The End!

We ended June on an evil Atlas note, and now we kick things off in July just the same, with one helluva Russ Heath horror tale from the April 1952 issue of Spellbound #2. And while it may say "The End!" there in that mind-blowing splash panel below, Mr. Karswell would like to let everyone know that this is actually... only... the... beginning...

A Sight for Sore Eyes / Let's Face It

Quick question: When in need of a special medical procedure, how many of you are willing to just go to some random dude in a cabin out in the middle of nowhere who maybe knows a thing or two about maybe being able to help you out? Let me see your hands... 1... 2... 3... 4... 5... 6?! ...oh, wow, a lot more of you than I expected! Okay then, you're gonna love this double feature, and both tales are also from the macabre March 1953 issue of Spellbound #13 --see our last post too!

++++++++++++++++++++++++

And when you're done here, head on over to my other blog HERE for a very special "Halfway to Halloween" story, --because yes, today is indeed very much your lucky day!
