Three Wishes From Dr. Devil

Horror Hero Monday once again, and this time it's a trio of 'em all coming together into one big Prize (Comics) fight to the finish: Dr. Devil, Bulldog Denny Dunsan, and Dick Briefer's immortally iconic, Frankenstein! This post also fulfills Todd's request for "more Briefer", which always sounds good in my book! This is a mega fun monster mash throw-down though, and a gruesome great glimpse into how Briefer could illustrate. I especially love all of the dynamic drawings of Frankie's big 'ol horrific hands... from the July 1942 issue of Prize Comics #22. Things are sure getting hotter 'round here as we approach Walpurgisnacht, eh!

The Whisper of Egypt

Here's a weird little Egyptian oddity recommended to me by "anonymous", featuring a particularly vicious panel of gory crocodile violence. I'm not sure I would have recognized this as Dick Briefer art, if not for the mysterious, sunken-eyed man who shows up at the bottom of page two (he looks distinctly Briefer-esque and right out of Dick's Frankenstein comic series!) Anyway, it's a fun little filler tale from the August 1952 issue of Airboy #102. Everyone have a nice xmas?

Frankenstein Meets Boris Karload: Master of Horror

It's been a few years since we encountered Dick Briefer's freakishly funny Frankenstein monster, and what better time to get a chill and a chuckle than on the first day of Fall 2022! Some really nice Karloff caricature work here by 'ol Dick as well. From the Jan - Feb '48 issue of Frankenstein #11.

Mike Monster Private Eye / Gunspook

Like the zany guy that he is, Brian Barnes requested some "comedy stuff", so here we go with a couple of kooky creature featured chucklers, one by Dick Briefer and the other by Don Orehek. From the daffy December 1958 issue of Zany #2, and the madcap March 1959 issue of Zany #3.

HORRORS

Working on a larger, eerier post that'll be up shortly, in the meantime I had a few requests for anything by Dick Briefer, so here's a fun day Sunday shorty from the September - October 1947 issue of Frankenstein #9.

And speaking of ghosts, advance copies of my new GHOSTS book are here (available everywhere October 8th), and it looks spooktacular! Click the image on the side bar (or HERE) to get more info and to pre-order your copy NOW!

Death in Reflection

Haven't posted anything around here by the great Dick Briefer in awhile, and digging through the Frankenstein files we find a good 'n spooky back-up tale from the February - March 1954 issue of Frankenstein #29, efficiently written and illustrated as only the dynamic Dick could do 'em! I really love stories like this where an unwitting sap just keeps talking to himself and doing things that are slowly but surely sealing his fate, while we the reader just sit back and watch his awesomely predictable demise coming from a mile away...

Frankenstein and the Plant

Awesome Arizona artistic, Layla, is not only a fantastic drummer, cosplay costume creator, and tee shirt designer, she's also a top notch prop master. Check out this amazing Little Shop of Horrors inspired, and fully functioning venus flytrap (meaning the head moves up, down, and side to side, and the mouth opens and closes) that she recently constructed from scratch.

She's currently building one for me too, and man, I totally cannot wait to feed my enemies to it! Anyone interested in one for themselves, or if you have an idea for something else you'd possibly like to see turned into a reality, just drop Layla a message HERE for price quotes :) Seriously, she can make ANYTHING!

And keeping with the carnivorous plant theme, here's a re-colored / reprinted Dick Briefer tale that originally appeared in the October-November 1954 issue of Frankenstein #33.
