Poltergeist / Army of the Dead!

Today's dreary Sunday matinee is another Charlton horror double-feature, a pair of supernatural weird war tales to really wake up your weekend. Both stories are from the Ghostly Tales series, with #55  being the actual April - May 1966 debut issue of its lengthy run. But up first, a really wild Russ Jones jolter from the August 1972 issue of Ghostly Tales #97, (I wonder if Ditko jumped in on that last page?)

Mummy's Hand / Curse of Frankenstein

In our last post we saw some Warren vampire action, so sticking with the black and white super 60's monster mag theme, I summon unto thee a deadly double header featuring quickie fun adaptations of Universal and Hammer mummy and Frankenstein film classics-- this time from Warren's great Monster World series, (issues #2 and #3) --story and art on both by terror team titans Russ Jones and Joe Orlando. FYI: Fans of of these magazines are encouraged to join the Warren Publishing Memory Lane group on Facebook, always something cool 'n creepy added there every day!

Wentworth's Day (H.P. Lovecraft)

Another classic from Christopher Lee's Treasury of Terror paperback (Pyramid Books, 1966), this time from the great H. P. Lovecraft, (a story actually completed after his death by August Derleth), and here adapted / illustrated by Russ Jones. Says Lee in the introduction: "...we are enchanted by the whirling mists of HPL's unmentionable world, with its horrendous song of the whippoorwills, all set amidst the lurking trolls of witch-haunted Arkham. The immortal creator of the mighty Cthulhu Mythos has written nothing more eerie than Wentworth's Day." Actually, I can think of a few HPL tales that are more eerie than this one, but who am I to argue with Dracula?!

We'll be heading back into the 1950's pre-code horror next, but I promise to return to Christopher Lee's Treasury of Terror later this summer with the remaining Robert Bloch and Ambrose Bierce tales, (fyi: it's a royal pain in the ass scanning stories out of an old paperback, and the main reason why it's taking so long to get this stuff posted-- the clean-up alone is murder!)

Spawn of the Devil!

THOIA "Flash Forwards" into the 60's and 70's all this week as we wage full-on war against the coming of the holy holiday! It's a wild 'n gory, satanic shocker by Russ Jones and Jerry Grandenetti, and first appeared in the Feb. '75 issue of Tales of Evil #1, (published by the other Atlas Comics, aka Seaboard Periodicals.)

And just ahead: Witches! Exorcisms! Demons! And more SATAN! And possibly even a visit from 'ol Santa Claus himself too... you think I'm joking, don't you?
