The Ashes of Death!

Oh my, did you guys think that last post was the final THOIA entry of 2022? No no no... we have one more visitation from our favorite vampy Atlas era heroine, Venus, via the October 1951 issue of Venus #16! This is Everett once again doing some fine work, though maybe not as iconically horror driven visually as he would later become. There are still some nice chilly moments to be had here though, errr, I mean as chilly as things can get down at the creepy old crematorium! Everyone have a great New Years Eve, we'll see you ASAP in 2023 as we dispose of the awful ashes of 2022 with--

The Box of Doom!

Let's finish out December 2022 with some more Bill Everett. And it's been quite a while since we've seen vivacious Venus va-va-va-voom her way across a half dozen precode pages of petrifyin' fun, so let's fix that pronto! This one's packed with all the scary stuff that makes Everett so effortlessly unequalled, I mean, there's a reason he's my absolute all time favorite artist ever-- just try to find a less-than-stellar panel in this one. It can't be done! He also created what is easily one of the most bone chilling precode horror covers ever--this, the classic April 1952 cover of Venus #19. So kick back and enjoy the ride, and afterwards check the archive for more Venus!

The Madman's Music / The Storm!

Here are the two non-Venus filler tales from Venus #17 and #19: "The Madman's Music" with spooky art by Pete Morisi, and "The Storm!" illustrated by Allen Bellman --a couple of simply told Atlas quickies revealing what eerily awaits below the earth, and the ocean.

The Stone Man!

The finale story in our Venus Fest is an epic tale of giant Stone Men invading Earth's surface (think King Kong meets The Monolith Monsters), but as "rock hard" as things get, what's a lovely little lass like Venus to do to keep from getting all wet? Being a typically bonkers Bill Everett creation, I have to wonder if these bad boys made any additional comeback appearences in Sub-Mariner? From the Dec. '51 issue of Venus #17. I also want to thank Brian Hirsch again for these incredible scans-- hopefully Venus will return to THOIA in the future for another va-va-voom visit!

Tower of Death!

Boppin' along with Bill Everett's beautiful blonde bombshell creation-- the ever vivacious Venus! I had planned to give you a double post today but ran out of time (sorry!) ...you'll just have to come back this weekend for the last story in our Venus Fest. From the December 1951issue of Venus #17. (Brian Hirsch scans.)

Demon from the Deep!

The second Venus story from the April 1952 issue of Venus #19 (scans also from Brian Hirsch), is a superb "horror on the high seas" tale showcasing Bill Everett's undeniable talent at its uniquely creepy, beastly best... yep, six perfect pages of efficient spook story gold! Also, the third Venus story in this issue "The Box of Doom!" is as amazing as the first two, you can see that one and another great tale over at Pappy's by clicking HERE! Plus! Hairy Green Eyeball has more HERE! I just hooked you up!

The Kiss of Death!

Celebrating Karswell's birthday today (and all week too) with posts dedicated to his all time favorite comicbook illustrator-- Bill Everett! And those of you who loved the sassy Scarlet O'Neil stories from last month better hold onto your britches, because we kick things off with a terrific Venus tale from the final issue of this amazingly eerie, and incredibly difficult to collect Golden Age series (thanks again to Brian Hirsch for these scans!) From the April 1952 issue of Venus #19.
