Horror Without a Head

One of my all time favorite precode Harvey stories is "Headless Horror" from the May 1952 issue of Chamber of Chills #8-- click HERE to read it in our THOIA Archive! It's surprisingly gory and superbly atmospheric, and seriously, I like it so much I put it in the "Scarifying Mr. Karswell Issue" of Haunted Horror #14! So again today we have an Eerie Pub remake/redraw, retitled "Horror Without a Head", and as usual we see an updated Harvey classic (this time with Nestor Olivera art) that is visually moody and cinematic, though I will say the 50's original is probably more effectively violent because we get to see all that glorious gore in FULL COLOR! Another interesting choice in the remake is to take the fabulous panel from page 6 of the original story and rework it a bit for the new splash. Like our previous posts this month, today's tale is also from the September 1981 issue of of Terrors of Dracula Vol. 3 #2. Anybody getting tired of these Eerie Pub remakes yet?

Friday the 13th Club

I've had this fun DC chiller saved for a while now, just waiting for a Friday the 13th to post it. Unfortunately, we don't have another F13 coming up until May-- arghhh!!-- so what the heck, Saturday the 13th is close enough. Featuring some slick pencil work from legendary artist Curt Swan, this tale originally appeared in the June - July '52 issue of House of Mystery #4. If you love old 1940's RKO murder mysteries as much as I do, then you'll surely enjoy this one. Plus, I'll have another eerie Curt Swan classic up next...

The Unbeliever / Let's Go Mad

Finishing up our full-issue examination of Adventures into Darkness #13 from March 1954... and we come full circle too with another moody, Tothy tale from Sekowsky and Peppe, --man, I love the silhouette work on this one! Hope everyone enjoyed this week of scans, check the last handful of posts for the rest of the issue (which included all of the fun bonus filler pages and even the text story.)

Up next we have a request, and it requires an eerie visit to the Twilight Zone! See ya in a few...

This Ship is Doomed!

Many of you seem to enjoy these Horrors on the High Seas posts, and we've got another one sailing your way now from the March - April 1952 issue of Witchcraft #1 from Avon. No art credit listed at GCD, though I'm fairly certain this is Harry Lazarus...

Triple Threat!

THOIA returns with another installment of "Werewolf Wednesday" and today we have something a bit (or is that bite?) different for you this time around! Our frightening friend and long time commenter chum, Trevor "Morbid" Markwart has concocted a hairy lycanthropy tale all on his own, written and drawn (and starring Aleister Crowley no less!), loaded to its furry gills with thrills, chills, and plenty of bloody spills! Give Trevor some feedback, fiends-- let him know what you think!

And check out Trevor's website HERE for more info on all things "Morbid!"

The Doubting Thomas

An incredibly generous dollar donation from new THOIA friend, Rachel Shaw, earns her a primo place right here in our musty 'n dusty hallowed horror fame! And with an eternal hearse-load of thanks and applause going way out to her in Albuquerque, NM-- another way we say thanks from our neck of the weird woods is give the people what they want! Rachel expressed a frightening fondness for Atlas tales, so here we go with a week of adventures into the weirdest worlds we can find-- more specifically, the July 1953 issue of Adv. into Weird Worlds #20. THANKS AGAIN, RACHEL!!! :)

Hoax / The Sea - Its Givings... and Takings!

I had a creepy chap write-in looking for a 70's comic he remembers as a lad but he couldn't recall any details other than it featured "a sea monster made out of barrels", and another story about a "hot mermaid." Pretty sure he's looking for the August 1975 issue of Monster Hunters #1, --and if this ain't the one I'll eat a hot mermaid! And fyi: the art on the hot mermaid tale is by Pete Morisi, many of you THOIA followers may be familiar with his awesome precode horror and crime work, so check the archives for more-- in fact, check out his Sewer Monsters tale HERE!
