Three Wishes From Dr. Devil

Horror Hero Monday once again, and this time it's a trio of 'em all coming together into one big Prize (Comics) fight to the finish: Dr. Devil, Bulldog Denny Dunsan, and Dick Briefer's immortally iconic, Frankenstein! This post also fulfills Todd's request for "more Briefer", which always sounds good in my book! This is a mega fun monster mash throw-down though, and a gruesome great glimpse into how Briefer could illustrate. I especially love all of the dynamic drawings of Frankie's big 'ol horrific hands... from the July 1942 issue of Prize Comics #22. Things are sure getting hotter 'round here as we approach Walpurgisnacht, eh!

Spirit World

Time once again to enter deep into the realm of the spooky supernatural. Or wait, let's just kick back and watch it enter into ours, via the April - May 1953 issue of Frankenstein #24. Nice artwork from (possibly) Simon and Kirby penciller / inker, Marvin Stein, who I believe is finally making his THOIA debut.

Frankenstein Meets Boris Karload: Master of Horror

It's been a few years since we encountered Dick Briefer's freakishly funny Frankenstein monster, and what better time to get a chill and a chuckle than on the first day of Fall 2022! Some really nice Karloff caricature work here by 'ol Dick as well. From the Jan - Feb '48 issue of Frankenstein #11.

HORRORS

Working on a larger, eerier post that'll be up shortly, in the meantime I had a few requests for anything by Dick Briefer, so here's a fun day Sunday shorty from the September - October 1947 issue of Frankenstein #9.

And speaking of ghosts, advance copies of my new GHOSTS book are here (available everywhere October 8th), and it looks spooktacular! Click the image on the side bar (or HERE) to get more info and to pre-order your copy NOW!

Death in Reflection

Haven't posted anything around here by the great Dick Briefer in awhile, and digging through the Frankenstein files we find a good 'n spooky back-up tale from the February - March 1954 issue of Frankenstein #29, efficiently written and illustrated as only the dynamic Dick could do 'em! I really love stories like this where an unwitting sap just keeps talking to himself and doing things that are slowly but surely sealing his fate, while we the reader just sit back and watch his awesomely predictable demise coming from a mile away...

Frankenstein and the Plant

Awesome Arizona artistic, Layla, is not only a fantastic drummer, cosplay costume creator, and tee shirt designer, she's also a top notch prop master. Check out this amazing Little Shop of Horrors inspired, and fully functioning venus flytrap (meaning the head moves up, down, and side to side, and the mouth opens and closes) that she recently constructed from scratch.

She's currently building one for me too, and man, I totally cannot wait to feed my enemies to it! Anyone interested in one for themselves, or if you have an idea for something else you'd possibly like to see turned into a reality, just drop Layla a message HERE for price quotes :) Seriously, she can make ANYTHING!

And keeping with the carnivorous plant theme, here's a re-colored / reprinted Dick Briefer tale that originally appeared in the October-November 1954 issue of Frankenstein #33.

Cursing Skulls!

Got a nifty back-up feature from the June-July 1953 issue of Frankenstein #25 today... it seems kind of obvious, but does anyone wanna take a stab at who worked on this one? I also want to apologize about the gutter on a few of the pages, this issue is badly stapled and this was the best I could do with the scan/editing.

Frightful Frankenstein Friday!

Today, 17 blogs will unite for a Web-wide event celebrating a new book by Eisner-award winner Craig Yoe, DICK BRIEFER’S FRANKENSTEIN and the character by that name. Prominent bloggers across the Web will be posting vintage Frankenstein comics, both from Yoe's book, which collects Briefer's top comics, and from the bloggers' personal collections(More info at the end of this post.)

Author Craig Yoe himself has the very first Frankenstein story from the December 1940 issue of Prize Comics #7 posted at his blog HERE! and then THOIA picks up the pulverized pieces for PART TWO from the January 1941 issue of Prize Comics #8:

For PART THREE in Dick Briefer's Frankenstein Saga, head over to And Everything Else Too! And of course there's lots more fearsome and funny Frankenstein action courtesy of these fine blogs too:

DICK BRIEFER’S FRANKENSTEIN: The first volume in Yoe Book's thrilling new series, "The Chilling Archives of Horror Comics," fittingly features the first and foremost maniacal monster of all time... Frankenstein! Dick Briefer is one of the seminal artists who worked with Will Eisner on some of the very first comic books. Briefer created a bizarre, twisted version of the classic Frankenstein that is legend among comic book aficionados. If you like the comic book weirdness of cartoonists Fletcher Hanks, Basil Wolverton, and Boody Rogers, you're sure to thrill over Dick Briefer's creation of Frankenstein. The large format book lovingly reproduces a monstrous number of stories from the original 1940s and '50s comic books. Briefer did both a dark horror take and a more humorous-yet twisted-styling of Frankenstein, and both are powerfully showcased here. The stories are fascinatingly supplemented by an insightful introduction with rare photos of the artist, original art, letters from Dick Briefer, drawings by Alex Toth inspired by Briefer's Frankenstein-and much more!

($21.99, 144 pages, hardcover) is now available in stores and online HERE!
