In our last post we saw some Warren vampire action, so sticking with the black and white super 60's monster mag theme, I summon unto thee a deadly double header featuring quickie fun adaptations of Universal and Hammer mummy and Frankenstein film classics-- this time from Warren's great Monster World series, (issues #2 and #3) --story and art on both by terror team titans Russ Jones and Joe Orlando. FYI: Fans of of these magazines are encouraged to join the Warren Publishing Memory Lane group on Facebook, always something cool 'n creepy added there every day!

I haven't seen "The Mummy's Hand" in decades, but I remember it being rather slow. "Curse of Frankenstein" is one of the great Hammer pictures, though.
I usually have nothing bad to say about Russ Jones but these adaptations leave a lot to be desired, especially the "Curse of Frankenstein." There's absolutely no action, and what action there is basically occurs in captions.
I wonder if Orlando was tracing in "Curse", the last page, especially, looks like there was tracing going on. It's really sticks out from the other art.
gripe gripe
I thought they captured the mood and look in their rendition of "Mummy's Hand". It was a slow plotted movie, so you can't fault the slow action in the comic. Then (as in when the film was originally made) as now (now being when this comic came out and today) it was meant to be enjoyed by the monster kid in us all.
Curse of Frankenstien was good too. When Hammer did horror right it was on par with Hollywood horror of the thirties, but when Hammer did horror bad, it was as bad as the horror films made by poverty row.
More pre-code (even post-code--I'll take what I can get) Atlas stories, please !
The artwork, at the very least, is pretty stunning in spots. I miss these types of mags being readily available.
A mix of stuff old and oldish coming up as we lead into October Country finally-- yay!!!
I didn't know there was a comic book adaptation of Curse of Frankenstein! Thank you for sharing all these comics.
