The great Gene Colan passed away last month (June 23rd, 2011), but his amazing legacy lives on forever in some of the greatest comic books and artwork of all time. And while recently digging through my pre-code boxes in search of stories for a seperate project, I stumbled upon this tale in the July 1952 issue of The Beyond #13. It's unmistakeably an uncredited Colan classic, (and lucky for us, also fits nicely into our current "Horror on the High Seas" theme.) Dig the zombie close-up at the top of page 6, who else but Mean Gene could capture such a superbly weird look of horror and sadness on the face of the living dead?

1. Until I read the last 2 pages; I wasn't sure which Ilsa I *most not want to run into in a dark alley; Ilsa The Sea Hag" or "Ilsa The She Wolf of the SS"! And, yes I know what that movie is about; and no I haven't seen it! My local copy has a book on "grindhouse films that mentions it and the sequils in some depth!
2. So being a sea-hag is just a bit like being a werewolf or The Incredible Hulk; huh?

I particularly liked the coloring here--page two looks like a stained glass window with all those contrasting panes. I like the zombie pirate you pointed out Karswell ("Arrrr! How Hideous!"), but the bottom left panel of page three is totally grooviest to me. I love all those radiating anxiety lines.
What a wonderful story and great art! Plus, could there be a more alluring title EVER than "Lure of the Sea Hag"?! I think not!
I've actually found even more precode Colan gems, but you guys will have to wait until the other project happens to see them! News on this still COMING SOON!
I'm still not certain just what went on...but it was COOL.
Jumpin' Judas! What a tale!
I really dig the precode lore from ACE magazines.
Not flashy, not gruesome, but always densely written and nicely done in an elaborate way.
Brainy stuff.
Hope to post some stories myself in the near future.
Well put, SpaceLord! I for one hope to see lots more ACE horror on the web, there's certainly a ton more great tales yet for me to post as well!
A double shot of doom coming up next-- DOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
