Nothing Can Save Her

Today we have an atmospheric chiller from the April 1953 issue of Adventures into Darkness #9, and though somewhat short and simple, it's absolutely full of haunting mood and lovely precision artwork... does anyone know the artist?

(Nick Cardy is the artist--- thanks Tamfos!)

For another spooky story with fantastic art from Adventures into Darkness #9, check the 2007 THOIA Archives for "Flowers on Deborah's Grave."

Nick Cardy is the artist. He did some work for Standard (all uncredited, of course) that's very distinctive. You've posted some of his other work in the past, I think.

Thanks Tamfos!

Karswell: I love the wide range of emotive facial expressions this artist (Cardy) gives to his characters - incredibly subtle and immediately recognizable. Everything from horror and surprise to very subtle feelings like earnestness and an appeal for sympathy. Really stunning.

And the vampire is so sexy I can barely stand it. If one is doomed to shuffle off this mortal coil, her teeth get my vote. -- Mykal

Wow. The facial expressions in this one are amazing, even by today's standards. Nick Cardy deserves a spot among the best of the pre-code horror artists.

MYKAL SAYS HER TEETH GET HIS VOTE, I SAY HER TEETH CAN HAVE MY THROAT ANY DAY! A REALLY WELL DONE STORY, LIKE YOU SAID IT IS SHORT AND SIMPLE AND THAT TO ME SHOWS HOW MUCH OF A STORYTELLER CARDY REALLY WAS. SOME PEOPLE PROBABLY COULD NOT TELL THIS STORY IN 10 PAGES THIS WELL.

I think I'll dig around through my pre-code Standard Comics and see what else I can find on Nick Cardy for a future THOIA showcase tribute, sound good? If anyone has story suggestions or scans they would like to contribute just drop me a line.

One more failed look at love, as we wrap up our post-Valentine Doom-o-rama... coming up shortly so don't stray.

Is that bonus story about the Brownn Lady part of the same issue of Adventures into Darkness?
