Haunt of the Ancient Castles

One more creepy classic from the May 1952 issue of Dark Mysteries #6. Longtime THOIA readers are fully aware of my undying love for Hy Fleishman's pre-code horror work, and today I have yet another! (FYI: I'll have more examples of Hy's superb work when I run a week of "Crime Horror" posts--- coming in November!) And please pardon the blur of some of the panels here, but no matter how much I flatten these pages in the scanner the water damage from years past have left their wavy mark.

Still haven't voted in our latest DRAW ME Contest? Check out the entries HERE and then pick your fave in the survey poll at the very top of the blog in the sidebar on the right!
+++++++++++++++++++++++
The kind of thing that makes running THOIA a dream come true:
Also stay tuned in November for more incredible news that connects THOIA with not only Hy Fleishman, but also a real life, 50+ year old Scottish vampire legend... seriously, you are not going to believe this one folks!

It looks like the letterer liked to smoke some of that muggles that the young whippersnappers are all talking about these days.

As a college teacher myself, I knew of the professor's intentions all too well. "Oh, let me call you Arletta." But then he had to blow it by killing her!

Awesome note by Fleishman, by the way. What an honor!

Karswell: regarding the fantagraphic forthcoming: "Forgotten Horror Comics from the 50s" -- well, certainly not forgotten here at THOIA, eh, Karswell? -- Mykal

Karswell: Also, as welcome as the recent Fantagraphic hardcover publishing efforts are, four color never looks quite right on hard, slick paper. The color is too bright - too glossy. For my money, the wonderful four-color look is best served by high-res digital scans on the Internet like, well, right here! -- Mykal

Thanks for the news Kelvin, and also to Mykal... I don't wanna sound like a snob tooting his own horn but I totally agree. And while the newer EC Archives and Atlas Era hardcovers are nicely produced, there's still something about them that feels too computery and removed from the actual vibe of reading a good old comic book, definitely the fault of the photoshop re-coloring and of course the slick gloss of the paper. I try to keep that newsprint vibe alive here at THOIA, as many of you know I take great care to enhance my own scans so you're not left looking at some murky old yellow and crooked comic page haphazzardly scanned with very little thought... my sincerest attempt is to keep everything about the story itself as close to the original product as possible, like it just came off the newsstand. It's always nice to hear that someone appreciates the extra time I put into my scans. I am definitely interested in seeing how these Fantagraphic collections are though, they're one of my favorite publishers (for example I just pre-orderd the limited edition Al Columbia collection that is FINALLY coming out sometime this month!)

Okay, I've got something different lined up for tomorrow, a dedication to my son who is finally learning about the magic of comic books! Stay tuned...

Karswell, I have to agree that it is pretty cool to read that an original artist of the wonderfully creepy stuff that you feature here appreciates your fine efforts.

Congrats!

I really wonder what the original dialogue was that was meant to go into Panel 4, Page 2. I PRO MISS YOU, you can be sure, wasn't it.
