Creature of Doom

The last story from the November 1953 issue of Web of Evil #8… let’s see if we can avoid the obvious Marvel "origins" comparison here and come up with something a little more unique. Call it a contest if you like…

TOMORROW: More doom!

Nuclear blasts really seem to be overrated. This guy was at the center of one and only got his nose blown off. And Indiana Jones rode one out inside a refrigerator. If you had tinted windows, you could probably park right next to an atom bomb in complete safety.

Why would the Commies have to infiltrate when the paper has all that information? Nothing says "Top Secret" like glaring 24 pica print. Heck, the article probably had the "secret ingredients" plus "Paul's Personal Favorite Atomic Recipes."

This has to be the most practically minded "monster" I've ever seen. "Yeah, I should just drive into town. Maybe pick up a dozen ears of corn on the way." When I got to the next page, I was almost surprised the art didn't show him loading the spare into the trunk.

That last panel on page six is the real treat of the story. Here's a man who has survived an atomic blast, separated from his body, flown, passed through solid objects, ridden in a jeep he can't actually touch, and discovered a red spy ring. But he pauses to, you know, parse the whole life-n-death rulebook, just so we can all keep everything square. Eureka!--if he'd really been made completely dead, well, he'd be able to see all the other phantoms and things. Obviously.

COOL STORY, I LIKE THESE TALES SET IN AN ARMY BASE IN THE DESERT. IT MAKES EVERYTHING FEEL MORE ISOLATED AND DOOMED!!

THIS WAS A REALLY GREAT ISSUE OF WEB OF EVIL....... SOMEDAY SOMEBODY MUST COLLECT ALL OF THESE ISSUES AND PUT THEM INTO A HARDBACK COLLECTION. KARS, WERE YOU REFERRING TO THE HULK IN YOUR INTRO??

I love the idea of a zombie patiently waiting in a car outside a suburban home.

Well that story was just plain Yucca!

Just kidding.

But you gotta admit the Hulk-connection is more than just him getting hit by a bomb; the spy subplot also shows up in the first Hulk story; it just isn't alluded to now because of how dated it is.

You can see why above-ground nuclear testing was discontinued, what with zombies, green monsters, incredible giant women, giant spiders, giant grasshoppers, and the like being created.

Those unintended consequences really bite at times.
