Dead Man’s Chest

Nope, it’s not a pirate story. It’s a twisted terror tale from Master Comic’s wildly disturbing Dark Mysteries series, and this one concerns a looney guy with a real problem to get off his chest…

From the September 1952 issue of Dark Mysteries #8

DEFINITELY ONE OF THE MOST F'D UP STORIES YOU'VE POSTED HERE LATELY. I LOVE HOW IT JUST GETS WEIRDER AND WEIRDER ON EACH PAGE AND THE IDEA OF HIM CHOPPING THE HEAD OFF HIS OWN CHEST AND LEAVING A GIANT BLOODY HOLE IS JUST AWESOME

I found the last panel to be very chilling. The idea that another head had grown back while he lay in his coffin is really spooky.

Dark Mysteries is a weird series. They have some really great stories as well as some of the absolute worst, and their artists and writers range from incredibly talented to pitiful amateurs. My favorite thing about this series though are the covers. Their art director must have really had a thing for skeletons because if you look at the full GCD cover gallery of this series it contains more bone daddies than the catacombs of Paris: http://comics.org/covers.lasso?SeriesID=853

Thanks for the Dark Mysteries post. I love the weirder stories like this one. Would like to see more from this title. It's the twisted story that makes this one so great. Mysterious Adventures was another one of Story's titles that featured skeletons on several of their covers.

Wow....that is some seriously nightmarish imagery there...and those scenes of the head being concealed(hate to see that photoshopped)and chopped.....i just....

Tony, I'm going to do a 4 day Mysterious Adventures fest in two weeks, lots of extra spooky weirdness for February!

>and chopped.....i just....

I know something is good when it leaves Horror Pariah at a loss for words! hee hee

Reminds me of the Tom Waits song, "Poor Edward"--which is a good thing!

Four days of Mysterious Adventures sounds great to me! As you already know, that title is every bit as deliciously weird as Dark Mysteries since they're by the same publisher, Story. Keep them coming and thank you for filling my requests!

I never seen a story so weird like this one in a pre-code comics! I love it! Karswell do you know the name of the author of this incredible story?

Sorry, no... anybody else have any ideas?

Wow, good story. If you think of the time when it was written ... I mean, it doesn´t make sense - loved the bone-surgeon and his cure-all operation - but it is pretty mean :-)

I love the weird panels in this and other tales where a deathshead is looking down from the background, or a skeleton and zombie are watching the protagonists do their evils...every weird, almost surreal (or at least expressionistic). Cinematic, too--a lot of the weird angles and compositions seem to prefigure later movie-making techniques.
