The Drowning Witch

Another isolated comic panel cropped out of context and doomed to travel around tumblr endlessly without explaination is the screaming woman holding up a baby with a goat's head. I've had a few people write to me asking about it, so here it is complete, a wonderfully odd 4 pager illustrated by rockin' Reed Crandall and from the September 1953 issue of Men's Adventures #23.

The Lonely Dungeon

OMG. Another kookball investigation into the legend of Frankenstein?!! And this one even more awesomely cockamamie than the last?!! Yes. Yes it is. And I guess if we're not careful, THOIA could become the new Frankensteinia, (I sure miss that blog!) --so with this post we also say a fond adieu to Mary Shelley's monster and then move on to other scary subjects coming up next-- but for now, enjoy one last mysterious trip down into the mad science lab, from the March 1954 issue of Mystery Tales #18.

The Return of the Monster

Just when you think Atlas Month is over-- here it comes again like a rampaging beast from Hell! Yes, looks like it's not quite through with you yet! And speaking of, looks like we haven't seen the last of Frankenstein's monster either! From the June 1950 issue of Marvel Tales #96, with unsigned story art credits going to Gene Colan and Vince Alascia, --and meanwhile, spooky Syd Shores turned out the seriously terrific cover art piece. So what came first, the cover or the splash?

The Monster

If anyone ever does a collection of Paul Reinman horror stories, I hope this murderous monster of Frankenstein spectacular from the April 1952 issue of Marvel Tales #106 is in it. I mean, aside from just being a flat out great story in nearly all pre-code comic aspects, it truly contains some of Paul's most panel packin' awesome work. The row o'four in the middle of page 5 for example should be hanging in an art museum, --or deadfinitely in a dungeon somewhere! I hope you all enjoy it, and I hope you all dug this full month of "The Atlas" tales, haha. Lots more on the way, stay tombed...

The Graveyard!

Time once again for another rousing adventure into the highly satisfying realm of the ill-fated great white hunter genre. You've read enough stories here over the years to already know this ain't gonna end well for 'em, so just kick back and let Dick Ayers set 'em up for the wonderfully big take down. Originally featured in the March 1954 issue of Mystery Tales #18.

The Hex!

Let's take a quick leap into the eerie era of post-code Atlas / Marvel tales, with a hexing Don Heck yarn about old world ways colliding with the new! It's a brisk little entry not too far off from the kind of thing you'd find happening in the Twilight Zone, and despite what it says at the bottom of page one, this story originally first appeared in the November 1956 issue of Adventure into Mystery #4.

The Killer!

All the world's a stage, as The Horrors of it All shines a shivery spotlight on a spine chilling Al Luster crime classic from the April 1953 issue of Mystery Tales #10.

The Corpse

Similar to last weeks post about the island, today's somber little tale of luridly living on, from the August 1953 issue of Menace #6, is as morbid as it is terrifyingly touching. It's a spooky Stan Lee and Russ Heath team-up, packing four pages of putrid punch to tug at the noose-shaped heartstrings you feel slowly winding around your throat...









Who else could you get to stay with a ghost, you ask? How about the woman that recently died in the house?! Anyone hear a knock at the door?

The Bones...

If you've ever felt the uncontrollable urge to kiss a moldy old human skull just dug up from an ancient grave, then this is definitely the story for you! From the super spooky, September 1953 issue of Men's Adventures #23, and highlighted with art by mad Mort Lawrence who kindly signed his name right on the tombstone in the splash.

The Baby-Sitter!

The weekend is still a few days away, but who's got big plans coming up? I guess in our current age of social distancing and hot spot closures it's tough to find some of that much needed entertainment and excitement. But when you do find it, oh boy-- call The Babysitter!!! Just be sure you have all of your P's & Q's in order before stepping out, because you never know what frightening frame of mind people are actually in these days.
