The Werewolf Must Kill!

Detouring back into the 1950's for Werewolf Wednesday with a snarling, toothy entry from the August 1951 issue of Harvey's Black Cat #30. Don't fret over the fact that this tale chooses to depict the werewolf as just a regular looking wolf animal, (I'm typically not a fan of this illustrative decision), because the lovely Lee Elias art, and especially the last page, more than makes up for it!

Terror in the Fog / Man on the Road

Two more extremely well illustrated tales from Fleetway's 1976 hardcover collection, The Valiant Book of Mystery & Magic (see previous post too!) Of course these chillers are a bit lighter in story than the usual 50's precode or later Eerie Pub horrors normally featured here, but that shouldn't dampen your enjoyment of the mood and atmosphere superbly created by these fine English artists, especially if you're a fan of 60's / 70's Gold Key or even the supernatural silver age DC series. There's a fun monster quiz in the middle of all this as well...

The Strange Old House By the Churchyard

I finally got my hands on a copy of The Valiant Book of Mystery & Magic from 1976. This 143 page hardcover from England is packed with color and black 'n white tales of the supernatural, featuring a frightfully fun and very atmospheric mix of creepy comic strips, monster trivia, and terrifying text stories, and all very nicely illustrated too! A majority of the book is comprised of stories about "The Spellbinder", a 400 year old sorcerer (that's him on the front cover below) who is accidentally revived in the 70's by his groovy modern ancestor (that's him in the last scan reading the book-- and more on those somewhat silly tales later down the road), but for now I thought I'd showcase some of the more serious stand alone horror tales contained herein, starting with a trip down to the strange old house by the churchyard...

As mentioned above, I'll have a couple more spooky tales (plus a few monstery extras) from this collection coming up next, so just like old Wulf Saverre-- stay tombed!

Cremation of Evil

Happy 4th of July everyone! And in light of tonight's fiery festivities which are set to ignite in just a few short hours, THOIA has a hot little number by Gene Fawcette to spark your fuses and make your day and night truly explosive! (Okay, who's got a good faucet joke to go with all of this fire talk?) Anyway, have a fun and very safe holiday, and please do not accidentally or intentionally re-enact the splash below at any point tonight! From the Dec - Jan 1951 - '52 issue of Eerie #4.

Anatomical Monster

Another one from the April 1953 issue of Eerie #11 (see our last story post as well.) It's a tale that's just as fun as it is wildly frustrating, mostly due to some writing problems that are somehow even more flimsy than the wonderfully whack Hollingsworth art. See what you guys think as we finally get rolling with some stories here in July 2019 --lots more on the way too!

A Host of Horrors

All three HAUNTED HORROR hosts recently found themselves in splendid creepy company in this amazing illustration by Tampa teacher / librarian, Lou Russo, featuring legendary horror hosts (old and new) and classic monsters alike! Mr. Karswell, Madame Clizia, and Forelock appear on the left hand side of the piece, just above Vampira and Svengoolie. And speaking of, this wonderful piece was also recently featured on an episode of Svengoolie, CLICK HERE to see an excerpt!

Thanks again to Lou for including us in the fun, and also to JMR for pointing out all of this to us in the first place! Can anyone put a name to all of the faces? First person to do so could win a special THOIA prize!

Crimson Death

Some very nice artwork --and how about that splash!-- highlights this Nodel and Alascia tale of voodooey vengeance from the April 1953 issue of Eerie #11. And take a lesson from this tale too while you're at it: if things in your life are getting stale, jazz it up with something terrifying, and / or deadly!

Blood Vengeance!

Like our last post, today's bloody ghost tale is also nicely illustrated by Charles Nicholas, and while it feels like the usual, colorful sort of 7-page ACG or Ace Magazines story, it's actually from the October 1951 issue of Weird Adventures #3 (see the Dr. Psycha tale posted last month from the same issue HERE!) Oh yeah, one other thing setting Blood Vengeance apart from the auspicious ACG or Ace tropes is the horrifically holy moly brutal climax which you just have to see to believe. THUD!
