Web of the Widow / The Fleshrippers

Multi-legged, spidery things ::shiver:: is there anything more icky and repulsive? How about adding a human or animal head to it--- eeek! "Web of the Widow" was originally presented in Haunted Thrills #16 ('52), and reprinted a decade later in the April '66 issue of Eerie Pulication's Weird Vol. 1#11. Also, you might learn a few interesting things from this tale: 1.) A slap across the face sounds like "SPLAT!", and 2.) scorched bones apparently have their own unique smell... P.U.

Fans of John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) remake might raise an eyebrow at the spider-dog panels in "The Fleshrippers" from the Jan. '81 issue of Weird Vampire Tales Vol. 5 #1. I have to wonder if Rob Bottin saw this story while designing creature concepts? Anyway, this is a marvelously moronic tale of scientific stupidity gone gloriously awry-- the best kind!

I really think I'd be a little afraid to spend the night in your house.

That aside...the black and white adds to the decadence of these I think...Fleshstrippers in color wouldn't quite do it for me.

Oh...FleshRIPPERS! That makes it all better. :)

Man, does the "I am your Master, you must obey me" gambit EVER work? I mean come on people. Also, what is a jungle girl doing on a college campus?

Thanks Jeff, but now I can't stop thinking about FleshStrippers!

>does the "I am your Master, you must obey me" gambit EVER work?

Even more hopeless is standing with one hand on your hip and giving out orders (see last panel of Fleshrippers page 4) while pointing and haha'ing maniacally. And oh lookie-- in the panel before it, it's The Spider-Pig that Homer was singing about in the Simpsons movie!

Gack! I even searched Widow to see if anyone had posted it before and came up nada... now I see you posted it last year Prof! Sorry! Oh well, one good story deserves another posting I guess. That's the danger of these scan blogs, and with so many of them now (and new ones springing up everyday) the chances of repeats increase. At least my scans came from a different Eerie reprint than yours, if that's any kind of excuse.

Okay, back to the pre-code next... keeping it REAL with some brutal "true" crime tales next, and reminder: bullet proof vests only work if someone shoots you in the chest!

I had not seen either of these before either, and I agree about The Thing. Even the fiery lab panels are reminiscent of the spider head scene. Good stuff!

Karswell: Great stuff! Last panel from Web of the Widow gets the "scariest smile ever" award! And, with regard to second story - would it surprise anyone if John Carpenter was a Weird and Eerie Pub devotee? -- Mykal

I don't know. I kind of found it attractive. Dragon- spider ladies are attractive. Would like to give her a big wet kiss.

Yes, women like her are a dime a dozen here in the states making it almost impossible for her to be found.

If she smiled at me, yes I would kiss her. For some reason, my copy of Mykal saying her smile was scary cut off. Hopefully now my reply makes more sense. :)
