Excursion!

Another Black Cat Mystery for you today from Bob Powell, featuring yet another pair of Harvey lovebirds on a romantic ghost ‘n monster infested, one way Voyage of the Damned. I suppose if you board a ship called the “SATANA” then you’re pretty much just asking for it, although this one does have a happy ending. Umm, that is a happy ending, right?

From the June 1953 issue of Black Cat Mystery #44

D_mn. That guy is tough! Just wish that he'd showed us how, as ya never know when ya've gotta fight a kraken!

My god. It really was horror unlimited! I love these stories that seem to have been made up by a number of people sitting around a campfire.

"They get out of the car, right, into a crowd of blue people who, like, totally ignore them!"

"But, no, no, the blue people totally talk to them, make them get on this boat!"

And panel five on page two, taken alone, really sums up each and every episode of the Love Boat.

They lost me when he strangled (!) the kraken. Who is this guy= Tarzan?

Would have been interesting to see what they had done to derserve the trip to hell. Ha, maybe they killed her former husband out of greed :-)

Yeah, Andy, but given the denoument reveal that the guy was actually dead, I supposed kraken-slaying was part of the Satana's "festivities".

This story was alot of fun.

THIS ONE WAS A BLAST. GREAT ART AND LOVED THE FUNNY SPOOKY ENDING. ARE YOU DOING BOB POWELL STORIES ALL WEEK? I HOPE SO!

I agree, how did this innocent couple deserve a trip of the damned on its way towards eternal fire and suffering? This almost reads as a continuation of another pre-code story after they had killed her ex husband or something (like Andy mentioned).

A great story, once again, with amazing artwork and atmosphere (though the Kraken wrestling match was a bit over the top).

Haha, funny comments today... you guys rule. I am going to break the mood here for a sec though and mention that today is the last Powell post this week. But don't fret, because Pappy has informed me that Wednesday he's showing the original art for Bob Powell's The Girl in the Moonpool from Chamber of Chills #11. Don't miss it!

Thanks for the reminder their destiny could have been even worse.

That's why I posted it! Have a Happy Harvey New Year!

Tomorrow: Machine guns, cement shoes, sinister chuckling, and oh yes---death by folding bed!! Just another "WTF Day" at THOIA.

Almost every single panel of this would make a great Holga shot.
