Mirror Macabre

It's February and wedding bells are a'ringin'! And what's a good present to give to the lovely couple after all is said, dead, and completely, utterly done for? Nice art throughout from Louis Zansky, and an equally cool cover here by Dick Beck. From the April 1953 issue of Hand of Fate #17, oh, and we'll be seeing more Ace atrocities all next month as well, --that's your head's off, errr, UP I mean, to always remember to stay eternally tombed and terrified...

Vampire Bride

Time to really nail this month long theme right where it counts-- with a blood lusting vampire bride on the loose tale, from the May 1952 issue of Web of Mystery #9. Happy Valentine's Day everyone, hope it's filled with plenty of X's and O's! And chocolaty coffins and creme-filled crypts too!

++++++++++++++++++++++

Also, the special Vampira issue of PLAYGHOUL is now available. Limited to 666 copies, and presenting a chronological collection of Maila Nurmi magazine appearances (as herself and as Vampira) from 1950 to 1964, plus comics and more. If you're like me, you've probably already seen about 95% of the content, (and for the hefty price tag, some of the scans are aggravatingly low quality), but for Vampira collectors it's certainly a worthy addition to your horror book shelf. Werewolf Husband

Louis Zansky delivers the hairy scaries today, as THOIA's Werewolf Wednesday rises to the ominous occasion like a full moon over a rich man's castle! And despite some slight color registration problems, this is definitely one of the better lycanthropy tales I've posted here in a while, I think... from the November 1954 issue of Baffling Mysteries #23.

When His Number's Up...

Tempting fate was never so eerie, --well, maybe it has been-- in this surprisingly reckless entry from the December 1954 issue of Hand of Fate #25, art by the ever reliable Louis Zansky.

The Witch's Vengeful Return

As we quickly approach Halloween, it's time to drag out a 300 year old witch for some THOIA black magic! This one from the July 1953 issue of Baffling Mysteries #16 features some attractive art from Louis Zansky, and a most welcome body count too! What witchy movie am I thinking of?

Spell of the Hypnotic Chord

Ace Magazine reprinted this Louis Zansky tale of a concert pianist given the hands of a killer in their final issue of The Beyond #30, but here it is from its first cover story appearance in the May 1951 issue of The Beyond #4 (see our last post for more from this issue, and one more story coming up in our next post too for another FULL ISSUE presentation here at THOIA!)

Dr. Gueux's Nightmare Monsters

Unless anyone has any objections, April 2013 might turn out to be Giant Monster Month here at THOIA. All the smashing, crashing, rampaging monstrosities you can possibly handle plus other BIG news! Kicking it off with an encore presentation of a favorite Ace tale of mine, first posted way back in Sept 2007, from the January 1953 issue of Baffling Mysteries #13. And speaking of giant monsters, has everyone picked up the new Yoe Books awesome Steve Ditko Monsters Volume One: GORGO collection? Come back in our next post to find out how you can win yourself a copy!
