Two-of-a-Kind! / Double Trouble

As we've seen over the years around here, sometimes the crime comics can actually out horror even the most horrific horror comics, and today's deadly double beheader from the July 1954 issue of Fight Against Crime #20 is no exception! A real two-of-a-kind with some serious double trouble, not to mention the SOTI worthy cover art (!!!) is just the icing on the severed head cake! GCD has no artist information on either story or the cover, unfortunately... anybody know anything?

Web of the Widow

Keeping the bone scorchin' thrills a'creepin' with another one from the August 1954 issue of Haunted Thrills #16. Man oh man, isn't that a great splash! And please don't let that gigantic block of opening narrative text turn you off-- this one is worth its webs in gold! Seriously, step into the THOIA parlor this morning-- don't make me SPLAT! you across the face!

Devil's Bride

A few posts back we had Satan's Woman Prize, now today we have the Devil's Bride! And seriously, what could have been just another Iger Shop tale of head splattering suicide and wrist gouged bloodletting (with cursed vampirism overtones), slowly transforms into a terrific tale of demonic possession that would make even William Peter Blatty grin from his coffin-- maybe by page 4 you'll see what I mean.

From the July - August 1954 issue of Haunted Thrills #16.

If I Should Die--

When you've read through enough of these pre code horror stories, you'll come to the predictable realization that if a character at any point in the story reveals what they are most afraid of, then 9 times out of 10 they will most likely die in that exact same manner. If being embalmed and buried alive is one of those fears, the odds change to 10 out of 10. And let's toss in millions of piranha worms just to make things even more hauntingly thrilling. From the November 1954 issue of Haunted Thrills #18.

Satan's Woman Prize!

If you enjoyed the satanic shenanigans of our last post, wait until you see what we've got up our smoldering sleeves today, from the January - February 1954 winter issue of Eerie #14. This is kind of an interesting issue in that Norman Nodel and Vince Alascia teamed-up on art duties for all four comic stories contained herein, and also created the canoeing cover art together! Eerie #14 was also the last issue of this great Avon series to feature all original material, before dragging along for 3 more issues by simply reprinting Eerie 1, 2, and 3 (but with new cover art) in the exact same order as well.

Dwellers in Darkness

I had a request this week for anything by Jay Disbrow, and further into the conversation after mentioning the Jay Disbrow Chilling Archives hardcover collection from IDW / Yoe Books (still available HERE), this same person (who shall remain nameless!) didn't even know the book existed somehow! Soooo, here's an example of a story from said collection-- a story that somehow also hasn't found its way into the THOIA Archive! Alright, killing two birds with one satanic stone, here we go with a definitive Jay Disbrow classic! From the September 1954 issue of Beware #11.

Slithering Terror

It's been a while since we've uncoiled a spooky snake tale around here-- so let's check in on a sinister snake worshipping cult and see what's biting! From the September 1953 issue of Beware #5, art by Henry Kiefer.
