"I Hired a Ghost!"

An appropriately themed Halloween party in a haunted house tale from the May 1953 issue of House of Mystery #14, with classic art by Leonard Starr and Bruno Premiani. And yes, maybe you're one of the odd ducks just now discovering THOIA, (really?!) --so as the eerie invite below states: "You Are Invited To Enter And Join In Our Fun!" Have a great holiday everyone, burn the midnight fires this evening, and we'll see you all next month for lots rots more!

Liquid X / Accident in Devil's Gorge

May Madness means it's time for a couple of mad scientist tales, and first up it's a Leonard Starr sizzler about a city destroying substance, from the January 1944 issue of Lucky Comics #1, followed by a queer little quickie from the back of Avon's cool Robotmen of the Lost Planet #1 one-shot issue from 1952. And I've rounded it all out with a mad little scientific minx by the ever sensational, Shubina, too!

There's no artist credit at GCD for the Devil's Gorge story, but I'm leaning towards maybe Everett Raymond Kinstler... anyone else have a thought about it?

The Vampire Swoops

THE HORRORS OF IT ALL swoops back into epic action with a blood sucker yarn from the October-November 1950 issue of Adventures into the Unknown #13, featuring art by Leonard Starr, who sadly passed away last week on June 30th at the age of 89. RIP

Suicide Tower!

It's been a few years since I posted a Dr. Thirteen "Ghost-Breaker" story, so here's a weird one, originally presented in the January 1952 issue of Star Spangled Comics #124, art by Leonard Starr.

I Talked With the Dead!

Dr. Terry Thirteen, or Doctor Thirteen (aka Dr. 13), "The Ghost-Breaker" first appeared in DC’s Star Spangled Comics in 1951, and lasted for only nine Golden Age cover story appearances total. But he later returned in the Silver Age to help out his bud the Phantom Stranger in debunking the supernatural (where applicable), plus many other modern day resurrections as well, before finally getting killed off (for additional D13 info please click HERE.)

But for now enjoy today’s atmospheric, landmark, Dr. 13 debut / origin, from the Nov '51 issue of Star Spangled Comics #122.

Want to see more Dr. Thirteen stories? Let me know!

My Dolly is the Devil

Last week we had voodoo dolls, today its devil dolls! Originally presented in the November 1950 issue of Black Magic #1, it's an eerie, simple little tale about a possessed doll. I would also like to take a moment to point out that this story saw print 13 years before the airing of a very similarly plotted Twilight Zone TV episode called Living Doll (aka Talking Tina), starring Telly Savalas. This is another topic I would love to expand upon in future posts; TV shows and films that unabashedly borrow or steal directly from pre-code comics. If you know of some yourself please let me know.
