Werewolf Beware

The January 1955 issue of Mystery Tales #25 is an important issue for fans of dynamic Don Heck, because this issue (according to the great Atlas Tales site) features Heck's very first Atlas story. And nearly 20 years later this wild piece of wicked werewolfery was reprinted in Marvel's Dead of Night #4 with a cool transformation cover by John Romita (see last scan after the story.)

We Meet at Midnight!

It's been awhile since we got ourselves good 'n mummified on a Monday, so here's one from Stan Lee and Paul Reinman, and originally presented in the May 1952 issue of Mystic #8.

The Eyes! / The Hidden Graveyard

Eerie eyeballs are the theme for today's THOIA Saturday Double Header Shocker, and Werner Roth gives you the eye first, with "The Eyes!", originally presented in the February 1952 issue of Adventures into Weird Worlds #2, ...then, Bob Forgione drags you screaming through the stinkin' jungles of terror with "The Hidden Graveyard", originally presented in the August 1954 issue of Uncanny Tales #23.

She Wouldn't Stay Dead!

If our last post left a grisly bad taste in your mouth, here's a somewhat lighter, even humorous Bill LaCava horror classic, originally presented in the January 1952 issue of Mystic #6. (And for those of you that will never get to sleep tonight unless you hear the song, click HERE for "The Last Rose of Summer.")

The Hands of Murder

March is Marvel month here at THOIA, and we're looking at the best of the illustrative big guns from the amazing 1950's pre-code Atlas bullpen... moving right along with a real spooker from Mike Sekowsky and Christopher Rule, originally presented in the June 1951 issue of Adventures into Terror #4. (And click HERE for a variation of this story from Mister Mystery #1 too!)

Waitin' for Satan

Not to be confused with Bill Everett's hilarious "Satan is Waitin'" that I posted back in July 2008, todays story was originally presented in the May 1953 issue of Marvel Tales #114 (art by George Tuska), and asks the question, "Is it possible to double-cross the King of Double-Crossers?" Read on friends...

Only a Rose!

Ahhh, computer and scanner issues resolved for the time being, we at THOIA appreciate your patience! And now, here's a neat little number from John Forte (and most likely Matt Fox), originally presented in the August 1953 issue of Spellbound #16... and what a mean-spirited tale it is at that, not only from the thorny female lead, but also from the hilarious narrative --you've gotta love that final panel epilogue, haha!

House for Sale / The Burning Flame

It's legends day here at THOIA with Dick Ayers and Gil Kane in a double, horror-headed, Atlas showdown... both stories originally appeared in the May 1952 issue of Mystic #8.

To see two more legends of horror illustration, head over to my other blog and check out my recent posts showcasing the spooky artistry of Fred Banbery and George Wilde.
