The Coin of Evil / The Mask of Graffenwehr

Today’s first story from the January 1954 issue of Out of the Shadows #11 pulls no punches in revealing where its inspiration comes from… which is fine by me, because the original W.W. Jacobs terror classic is one of my favorite stories of all time, and any variation is most welcome here at THOIA. Enjoy!

SATURDAY & SUNDAY: Our Standard Comics Fest continues with a pesky ghost and waterlogged zombie! Weird fun from one of the wilder publishers of pre-code...

the first example of Alex Toth's work i was exposed to was the production drawings he did for Space Angel. here's a link to the six-page comic he drew for Jack and Jill magazine in '63 to promote the show. it's not quite as loose and free as his usual work but it's fun nonetheless!

Coin Of Evil had superlative art, no guesses as to who drew it?...

Well you sure can't accuse this one of not revealing it's source material.

It is hard to critisize the astounding lack of originality if the writer himself names the source so openly. At least it was very well told in the art department.

As for the two pager... hm, nicely drawn. A complex tale in two pages. I wonder why I get the urge to put Masque of the Red Death in the DVD player tonight :-))

THE MONKEY'S PAW IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES AS WELL, VERY NICELY TOLD AND THE ART REMINDS ME OF TOTH TOO. IN FACT LOOKING AT THE SWAMI BEGGER ON PAGE 2 I'D SAY WHOEVER DREW THIS IS HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY TOTH.

LOVED THE BONUS STORY TOO.

Aieee! The burnt son waiting outside to come in was creepy!

I always enjoy takes on the Monkey's Paw, especially the version done for the early '70s Tales from the Crypt movie ("Wish You Were Here" from the Haunt of Fear #22).

What a treat! The retelling of a classic crediting the classic within the retelling. And so well done it still chills. That's got to be a rarity.

Thanks for continuing to post over the holidays, K.

All I want for Christmas is another good HEAD SPLATTER!

I especially like the forshadowing around the son's head in the splash panel... mama's perfect angel about to be turned into an extra crispy one.

And I agree with SFDoomed, the "Wish You Were Here" segment in the Amicus Tales from the Crypt film is quite terrifying, probably the best part of the whole movie... nothing worse than being brought back to life after you've been embalmed and hacked to pieces. Ooops! That's gotta hurt!

Also,(per the Toth comments) those of you who are new to THOIA might want to check my June '08 archives as I featured an entire week of some of his best stories.

Everyone have a nice Thanksgiving? Anyone explode from over stuffing?

The Coin of Evil was really good, and might be one of the best Monkey's Paw variations I've ever read, and we all know there's hundreds of them.

I would love to see more Toth stories too if you have them.

Howdy,

I could be wrong but, it looks like maybe the art for this one was done by Nick Cardy. Something about the faces. Enjoyable none the less.
