Found: The Lair of the Snow Monster

The first official day of winter is still a few weeks away, but we’re jumping the gun a bit and Tuesday through Thursday we’ll be featuring some sinister snow monster mayhem... and what better way to begin a theme than with a repulsive Harvey monstrosity from the November 1952 issue of Tomb of Terror #6.

TOMORROW: A were-WHAT?!

My, but that was SHORT. So how long do you suppose the snow monster was hangin' out in that there LAIR waiting for some FOOD, hmmmmmm? Must'a been awful HONGRY for some explorer types.

But what confusinates me is, how come our hero got his arm pulled off and didn't BLEED TO DEATH while finding his way down out of the Tibetan mountains (which we might be forgiven for assuming are the Himalayas, hence in all likelihood are a LONG way from any "transport ship")...

But aside from that, the story is quite believable. In fact, I had just such an adventure befall me once, only it was in the back yard instead of the snow-blanched Orient, and it was a slug instead of a snow monster, and it left a trail of disgusting frocky on my arm, rather than tearing it out by the roots, and I went in and washed it off, rather than dry out in a insane asylum.

So I can identify. Thanks, K.

"Then how do you explain this!!!?

I can explain that by saying your arm is tucked inside your shirt. I can see it.

And as far as poetic similes go, I think "he was swallowed like [...] food!" might be my favorite all year.

His arm met a buzz-saw?

Always nice to see that everybody reads the same stories. Mountains of Madness anyone?

The ending is wrong, though, he had to change into a spawn of the shoggoth and swallowing the gentleman, cackling "Iä, Iä ..." :-)

But that would have needed an extra page.

That creature... true horror! The bastard spawn of Dr Lovecraft and H P Seuss!

COOL THEME AND ANOTHER FUN STORY. SEEMS LIKE ALOT OF THE MONSTERS IN HARVEY STORYS HAVE THOSE DISGUSTING OOZING CRATER PORES ALL OVER THEIR FLESH. GOOD SOUND FX HERE TOO, FROM THE ARF ARFS OF THE DOGS TO THE SQUISH AND PLOPS OF THE MONSTER.

TO ANSWER BLACK WALNUT I THINK MAYBE YOU COULD SURVIVE IN THE THAT SETTING FOR A WHILE WITH AN ARM MISSING, IF IT'S COLD ENOUGH WOULDNT EVERYTHING JUST FREEZE?

Not just any ol' pile of hokum, but a superstitious pile. Worst kind.

Another tale among gentlemen, introduced by the warmth of the fireside. What I don't get about these is that they seem to know each other well, but then, in this case, the freakin' missing arm has been unnoticed until now!?

Thanks for the Tuesday treat, Karswell, and the video footage bonus!

I was waiting for the HPL comments, nice work people!

>and the video footage bonus!

I realize it's been a while since I posted a video clip... in fact I haven't posted a trailer since October. That doesn't mean I haven't tried since then, blogger sometimes like to throw my youtube links into the atmosphere with Dandilo the cat. Does anyone else experience this type of problem, where a video clip just never materializes on your blog no matter how many times you try to add it? It's happened to me a couple times now.

Also, does anyone even care about these videos? They usually only receive a few comments, much less than the comic scans... and as much as I love old trailers I'm mostly not so inclined to add them anymore if no one really watches them or cares. Let me know...

Yeah, I love them and alwas watch them, but unless I have something to add - even just a stupid dirty joke - I usually don't comment.

And the video thing - are you trying to upload/linky/whatever through Blogger? Because that always gave me the same sort of fits, as did trying to publish it through from YouTube. Now I just click on the "embed" code and copy/paste.

If that's what you're already doing, forget I said anything. :)

this story might have been an inspiration to whoever came up with Caltiki the Immortal Monster, which Mario Bava directed. anyway, i like blobs. Creeping Terror, anyone?...

Beast From Haunted Cave is a nasty little film.

I agree the ending kinda feels like a cheat, he's not a Shoggoth in disguise or somenthing and the way the lump on the side of his shirt is drawn looks like he stuffed his arm down there as a prank. Enjoyed it nevertheless. > Dr. Lovecraft and HP. Seuss<. ohh if only i had all of their books, i only have HOW THE NIGHTGAUNT STOLE CHRISTMAS and HORTON HEARS A SWARTHY FOREIGNER.
