Images of Sand

Toth Tribute Day Four! As we drool over another pre code classic we should also take a moment to compliment Mike Peppe who consistently weaved a fabulous ink job on much of Toth’s pencil work for Standard Comics. In fact, Peppe also worked on Murder Mansion, The Hands of Don Jose, and The Phantom Ship as well, among others.

Originally presented in the March 1954 issue of Out of the Shadows #12

Reprinted / re-colored in Seduction of the Innocent #4

Ever wonder how persistently aggressive and dedicated Toth was about the craft of comic book illustration? Check out this startlingly blunt, but 100% correct critique by Toth on Steve Rude’s Jonny Quest comic.

The ending is a bit predictable , but as usual Toth manages to get an entertaining story , thanks to his storytelling skills ...Very interesting and instructive to read his critique on Rude's work ...

Thanks

DECENT TOTH STORY, I LOVE HORROR TALES SET IN THE DESERT, FOR SOME REASON THE HARSH LOCAL SEEMS VERY SCARY TO ME.

BUT OMG THE JONNY QUEST CRITIQUE IS BEYOND AMAZING, OVERSHADOWED THE STORY TODAY ACTUALLY. NO POINT IN CANDY COATING IT EH ALEX? BUT YEAH EVERYTHING HE SAYS MAKES TOTAL SENSE EVEN THOUGH I REALLY LIKE STEVE RUDES STUFF HE'S NO TOTH AND NEVER WILL BE.......... AS TOTH IS SO QUICK TO POINT OUT

Tauregs get good gas mileage, I hear. I'm just sayin'.

This was a fun one, great art of course, with lots of cool moments:

"My little baggage?" Dude, work on your pillow talk!

So, the thief is going through the drunk's bags...yet she's wearing a necklace worth a FORTUNE? Maybe thievery is a hobby...

"Wait, she didn't tell me where the rest is!" Henri == ID10T

"I'm frightened! It's there, but I'm frightened! Up in the cave on the mountain! Have I mentioned I'm frightened?" Terran == N4G

And of course the SUDDEN BLOODBATH on pg. 4 is just icing.

Cool stuff!

"Images of Sand" has probably been one of my favorites out of the Toth stories that you've run this week, Karswell.

There's just something about it, I guess.

It was also interesting reading his take on "The Dude's" Quest pencils.

There's a few of these Toth critiques floating around, and they're so much more than just a guy raving about design essentials. What you really find in this one in particular is Toth's incredible passion for the art itself, and how it can always be better than what it is... he's rough on Rude because he knows Rude is better than this. If you read through the comments after the critique a commentor mentions a link where Rude explains his reactions to Toth's.

This is also my favorite of the Toth posts, mainly because of the desert locale's authenticity.and you are all right about the bonus from Rude,Toth was a great draftsman and his points are all true, but it would be hard to get on with the man in person.

Vicar of VHS = hilarious.

Toth was absolutely right about the composition ... the way Rude laid out the characters' positions and showed them to us seems opposite to their intended importance in the story.
