The Hunter and the Hunted!

I've posted a ton of stories here over the years at THOIA about jerk ass, big game hunters who find the terror tables turned on them gorily and ironically in the final panel-- but you ain't ever seen a bat shit crazy ending like this one-- unless you encountered this tale reprinted a few times in the Eerie Pubs (and don't let the splash panel fool you either!) Originally presented in the August 1953 issue of Mysterious Adventures #15, art by Doug Wildey.

Hah! The real splash is kind of the cover, then. At least thematically.

But speaking of the twist beginning here, I do love the actual splash panel. What I thought when I saw it: That tiger's head trophy is from Bombay? What, you mean the city zoo? But then, after reading the story, that seems perfectly appropriate to the cowardly and cheating nature of this character. I kind of wish they'd included the page where he poaches fat, exotic entertainment animals from their cages. That would have totally rocked.

Oh my, that ending could only be better if they'd put the brontosaurus' in smoking jackets.

Of course, brontosaurus don't exist (it was a mismatch of bones, really the Apatosaurus), and those aren't even sauropods, they are theropods! Honestly, I'm shocked, shocked you hear, at the lack of scientific research from an Eerie pubs!

Our hero was one in the great lines of heels from horror stories, it spends 95% of the comic just setting him up as a jerk of highest order.

I love that they have a ball return. How do the pith helmets stay on?

Er, uh, would you believe I was just testing you? Or have I been caught reading to quickly through the preface? :)

I'd like to see you devote some space to Basil Wolverton. His story in an Atlas precode called "The Devil Birds," deserves to be seen.

Dont have it. If you have scans email them to me and I'd be glad to post it.

I don't have it either. Just a one page teaser at the Atlas Tales website.

I like the way that anthropologist shouts "Epic!" as if it were a slang word. Because it eventually became one.
