I Married a Teen-Age Fly

Sunday Fun Days are here again with a wild, satirical whack at horror comics from the 1950's, and it comes courtesy of a midcentury girlie magazine to boob-- errr, boot! Of course, this could also easily be whackin' it at sci-fi horror film classics like I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957),  The Fly (1958), and I Married a Monster from Outer Space (also 1958), but let's just stick with the blurb's intention from the back cover of the memorable, March 1959 issue of Fling #13. Some really nice, titillating artwork here by cartoonist, Don Magolis, and while the writing isn't quite up to a MAD or Cracked level of crazed, sight-gag filled hilarity, it's still worth the handful of chuckles and everyone's attention for the risque / mad monster mash-up freak factor alone!

She Stalks at Sundown

Time now for a lurid, Lou Cameron, cat-girl classic, clawing its way at you from the January 1954 issue of Web of Mystery #22. Full of juicy good-girl art, and jungle jitters galore, I'm actually kind of surprised that I've never posted this one here at THOIA before. And meanwhile, I'm equally as baffled as to why it didn't make it into Cameron's Unsleeping Dead hardcover collection, via The Chilling Archives. We also have another beautiful "blonde in peril" cover design by mad man Jim McLaughlin, --plus, tacked on at the very end to round things out nicely, a shivery "Tale of Unexplained Mystery" by Sy Grudko concerning a macabre magic mirror...

Curtain Call

Surpisingly, we've only seen a few posts here over the years from DC's great Secrets of Haunted House series (click HERE for more!) And today's entry falls under the "Tales of Destiny" banner, featuring the purple cloaked, Hand of Fate-esque horror host, Destiny himself actually interacting with the story characters as a foreboding warning to the shivery love shenanigans that await. It's a far-out Jess Jodloman illustrated tale that also adds in some mad science and sweet sci-fi elements for the final climactic, galactic cherry on top. From the August 1979 issue of Secrets of Haunted House #15. One more March post still ahead— stay tombed!

Stranger in Town

We're celebrating the first day of Spring 2026 here at THOIA, as well as over at AEET, complete with some do (though focusing on don't) tips about how to really bring your plants and garden back to life! Well, maybe not exactly THIS much "back to life", but you all know what I'm talkin' 'bout, right? And when was the last time we saw anything by Reed Crandall around these parts? It's seriously been a long cold, errr, half decade+, for sure! And okay, don't get your hopes too high, cuz this ain't even by him anyway, even though it's credited to him! It's actually, of course, terrifyin' Tom Sutton layin' down his usual brilliant, and ominously organic artwork! Also, that stunning London After Midnight cover painting is by the great Basil Gogos, and not Charles Schulz, or Barry Gibb, --via the awesome April 1969 issue of Creepy #26.

Web of the Spider Woman

Spider Woman?!! But I thought Kars said we were done with hero stuff for a while! Annnnd indeed we are, as this is not a Marvel post, --but a creepy crawly Ace classic from the June 1953 issue of Hand of Fate #18. Artist Bill Molno densely packs every panel perfectly with loads of eerie atmosphere and lush line work, keeping the weird web motif spinning strongly in roof textures, foliage, fabrics, hair, fur --and fear! Artist George Roussos must have really loved that splash panel below, because a few months later he pulled quite a superb swiperoonie of it for the October 1953 cover of Out of the Shadows #10, just sayin'. Oh, and Happy Friday the 13th to each and every one of you today, too!

Inheritance! Greed...

Everyone enjoyed the dynamically deadly Ditko story in our previous post, so how about another? Also from the June 1954 issue of The Thing #14, it's a batty tale of archeological ancient curses and double-crossin' switcheroonies! Ditko is also responsible for the amazing cover! Annnnd to top it all off, there's an extra little Tony Tallarico quickie from the February 1954 issue of The Thing #12, --containing an equal amount of ancient, ancestral atrociousness! You have most definitely been warned for like centuries now...

Circle of Death

An old family curse comes full circle once more, in this chilly, atmospheric entry from the December 1952 issue of Weird Horrors #5, --and thus proving again that sometimes love actually won't keep us together. Anyone recognize the artist?
