Teddy Doesn't Seem to Smile Anymore!

Wow, we haven't had a Frank Robbins story around here since 2016. Time to fix that with a funny little 3-page chiller from the August - September 1974 issue of House of Mystery #226. Nobody draws cute women quite like 'ol Frank did, and here's a perfect example...

I don't have much to say except I'm a big fan of Frank Robbins comic books and especially when he was allowed to ink himself. I can't say this story is any great shakes, but he really gives it his all and makes that teddy bear one creepy mother.

And, yeah, his women are pretty all right in my book as well.

One of the best parts of being an artist on a horror book is the ability to add random stuff to panels, and especially if there's a host -- you get to draw that person as a participant in the story. Here, with the wedding suit, but the real joy is the great bat/bear toy monster.

Page 2, panel 5, I guess this was past the days where the code meant anything!

I'm not sure why the sudden heavy black panelling. Was Robbins going for vacation photos? Why is there one on the first page?

Robbins was another guy I didn't like as a kid (say him first in the pages of the Invaders at Marvel) but grew to love him as I got older. Acquired taste for me, but a great one.

Teddy looks quite naughty in that last panel! I love it!

There's a dramatic story in Eerie # 48 called "Think Of Me And I'll Be There," where a woman's teddy bear is a real plot point, and this feels like a comical take on it.

Lots more Robinson in the THOIA Archive, just use the key word search or tags for more! Thanks for the comments --and stick around for a visit from Dr. Graves up next...

Nice art.
I'll check out more of his stories.
This story isn't good but his art , even though it's hard to tell why he's doing the black panels maybe there was a reason that eludes us now.
Does three pages seem odd for this comic? This story seems like it might have missing pages.
Maybe there are more pages after page two that weren't able to be published but they liked the art so they thought it might work as a three pager.
