Page 7 (of this set) really shows the versatility of the great old artists.
The werewolf/ape-man would be right at home in a 50s pre-code and it's a great horror drawing, but the female (demon? Vampire?) is both 50s pre-code seductive and comic at the same time.
And that's just a great comical Frankenstein. You really want to hang with him instead of run from him!
Karswell: I've read where many greats (including Severin) spoke of Maneely in reverential tones - all seeming to agree his place in comic book art history would be much higher had he not died so young. It's easy to see why in the first few pages here. Wow, just look at that inking! Apparently, he was one of those artists that, basically, drew in his inking; i.e. his pencils being just very light outlines of basic shapes and stick figures. That ability always knocks me out!
I was not aware of these Maneely pages (the last one is his as well). He had been dead 8 years when this was published so where did it come from? From an earlier issue of Cracked I have forgotten? I have the whole first two years...
Not the last one, I mean the Modern Day Monsters.
>the female (demon? Vampire?) is both 50s pre-code seductive and comic at the same time.
For sure, she's pretty much my favorite thing in the whole issue.
>That ability always knocks me out!
Agreed!
>dead 8 years when this was published so where did it come from?
I have no idea, the issue itself doesn't mention containing reprints. If you find out anything please let us know!
Thanks for the comments!
