Vampire of the Deep

Okay, before anyone groans about another vampire, please know that this isn't your typical, everyday vampire story. From the June 1953 issue of Forbidden Worlds #18 (and fabulous art by Lin Streeter), this marks the end of the blood suckers for awhile, and the start of another theme as we head out on the scary high seas for more horrors lurking above, and below the surface! Bring some extra Dramamine and a life jacket--- you'll need it!

I needed a laugh this a.m. ;-)

Salagua - what a name. Well at least it's original, I guess.

"Thought I heard a splash -- flying fish, probably." :-p

Are all sea vampires BLONDE?

Really wise of the Captain to loudly air his suspicions a sea vampire's on board; and in earshot of mysterious newcomer Salagua!

They suspect *Jansen*? What nitwits. :-O

I loved it when Eve suggested the helmsman may have been killed by a passing flock of vampire bats...

...Dirk forgets that silver nitrate in food must be digested before entering the blood stream; that's what took so long.

And Eve's going to marry that dumb dumb? But then she's no great shakes in the Smarts Department either.

Also funny how Salagua dumps a bucket of water over his head to change from "the hated man form" to vampire.

Really enjoyed this one.

Of course! It was a passing flock of vampire bats. That's one of the best explanations I have ever heard. For anything.

Yeah. From now on I'm going to blame any/everything on a passing flock of vampire bats.

Will try that line on my husband later today!

I ACTUALLY DIDNT MAKE IT TO WORK TODAY BECAUSE OF A FLOCK OF PASSING VAMPIRE BATS!

COOL STORY, I ALWAYS LOVE THE LIN STREETER STORIES YOU POST HE HAS SUCH A GREAT SLEEK STYLE. THE SEA MONKEYS AD WAS A PERFECT ADDITION TOO HA!

That final panel isn't quite an 'oops' moment, but certainly well configured. The artist here shows some of their inspiration, with a touch of Everett, a smidgen of Ingels. A great suck-way into your next theme... blub blub...

I believe it, Anonymous. I forgot to pick up eggrolls for dinner tonight.

Darn that passing flock of vampire bats. >:-(

Awesome!
Loved the art, loved the sea vampire! Lots of fun.

Thanks Karswell!

Oh, don't buy the sea-monkeys -- there a rip-off! It costs way too much to get a whole plate-full and they taste like crap anyway! Do not Buy!

Very nice art, but where are Aquaman or Namor when you need them?

"Vampires of the Deep" is one of the best titles I've ever seen.

how do those passing vampire bats do it?

although the most hilarious part to me was when the hero bravely volunteers to cook.

Karswell: Sea vampires! Slimy, purplish, web-fingered sea vampires! That's the coolest concept I've read in a long time. The very name is cool. Also, the art was cool. Like Lysdexicuss observed - a dash of Ingalls, what with all the liquids and slim dripping from fingers and mouths; but frankly I like this better than Ingalls. I loved the smooth blacks in the inking, and the panel construction. Cool post. I didn't know of Lin Streeter, but I do now. Thanks. -- Mykal

Lots of Lin Streeter stories in the THOIA Archives, just use the search box at the top o'the blog.

I'll try to get another story up either later today or tomorrow, this weekend has started off disasterously, so keep checking back... thanks for the comments and damn ya'll, quit blaming the vampire bats for everything--sheesh!

Flying fish do exist, except they don't actually fly but glide a few meters then splash in the water, quite tasty fried also.
