The Grim Unreality

Normally I kick off the new year with a full issue presentation, but the grim reality of it all is that 2010 arrived alot earlier than expected. So in the meantime you'll just have to settle for some grim unreality... it's a mad fright fiasco from Fawcett, and appeared in the October 1952 issue of This Magazine is Haunted #7. (Psst! Come back next week for a full Atlas issue!)

Hope everyone had a great New Years Eve too!

man oh man, now i know how to get rid of people i don't like- kill 'em and then tell a bunch of people a demon did it! let's see, who's first?...

my reality is grim enough, if my unreality gets that way- well, that'd suck...

oh, loved the pretty colors, too!...

Karswell: I loved the hell out of this story and thought it brilliant. I love when a story goes into deeper and deeper levels like this one, hinting at different endings to finally hit you with a clever sucker punch. This reminds me of the best short stories from Clark Ashton Smith or Lovecraft - all in a brisk 10 pages (grand comic scripting!). Nice way to start the year. -- Mykal

I find it interesting that the villain of this, a horror comic, is a character who loves scaring people.

Great story! I worked for a few years with collectibles and got very into pre-code horror. When I left that job, I thought I'd never see that stuff again unless I purchased it. Thanks for making it accessible!

Thanks for the comments! Loving all the new faces around here in 2010 (not that I'm tired of the old ones or anything), but welcome aboard the Horrors of it All Express! If you are new to THOIA be sure to dig around the archives for more posts from the last 3 years. Thanks again!

I face the grim unreality every day...lately. :-(

Speaking of archives, I'm going to have a look at the very first blog post.

Amen brother! this is a great story.

Another thing I like about these comic blogs, I don't get nose bleeds from mold allergies anymore.

What a cool story to kick off the new year... a double-twist, what-is-reality deal. (It's neat how Painton never gets upset, he just goes and fixes Korey's wagon for him.)

Great fun here always for a demented mind out on the prowl for some dark sided inspiration. O.K. I have to go back to my little shop now and hook up some electrodes, fry some brains and have some fun.

If only mind over matter worked that easily. So many people I could make disappear--and convince to give me money.

Shades of CURSE OF THE DEMON which came out just a few years later! At least a few panels brought to mind that ( highly accurate ) horror classic...

Don't look at me, RR... I didn't unleash the demon, (this time.)
