Phantom of the Wax Works

This might be the first Harry Lazarus story I’ve ever posted that wasn’t from his pre-code days at ACG. And I don’t know about you but I love wax museum tales, even though they all sort of have that same-ish scenario of, “…so life-like, what an uncanny resemblance too--- wait--- there’s a body inside the wax?! AIEEEEE!” Clichés aside, there’s hardly a creepier place than a wax museum, and I’m not talking about just the Chamber of Horrors section either.

The Wax Museum

I have nine, weird wax museum stories in the THOIA Archive-- the last one added back in 2019. So let's make it an even odd tenth terrifyin'  tale today, and this time with Don Rico turning up the hellacious, haunting heat! From the February 1951 issue of Marvel Tales #99!

The Wax Man! / Ordeal by Wax!

I took my son to our local wax museum here in STL last month, and we had so much fun I thought that I'd take you all on a terrifying trip to one as well! Our first tale in today's doomed double feature via THE HORRORS OF IT ALL WEIRD WAXWORKS COLLECTION is from the March 1953 issue of Chamber of Chills #16, followed by a steamy little number from the December 1952 issue of Weird Mysteries #2  --some of you might remember this one from Haunted Horror #15.

Whacks' Museum

I still owe you guys some promised stories from Charlton's THE THING series, but now I'm having scanner issues and it will have to be delayed yet again!! Arghhh!! All apologies, folks, they don't call this place THE HORRORS OF IT ALL for nothing! In the meantime, here's a funny old 4-page Bill Everett story I had on hand that I actually donated to another blog years ago, but it never officially found its way back here to THOIA-- until now! Kooky-spooky wax museum shenanigans that originally appeared in the February 1954 issue of Crazy #3, and then apparently slightly updated for the December 1974 issue of Arrgh! #1.

The Wax Men / The Museum

Prepare yourself for a THOIA double dip into our bubbling cauldron of Weird Wax Works today, and this time it’s a sinful Joe Sinnot tale o’terror vs. a killer Bob Powell chiller. Take your pick, or read them both… just don’t sit too close to the flickering fire!

Murderer’s Row

It’s the final Saturday in April that means the last of the great Brian Hirsch submissions from The Thing! Anyone know the artist here? Also, as mentioned in yesterday’s comments there will be no new posts this Sunday, but there will be two story posts on Monday to make up for the loss of creepiness, (another story from Brian and the other from lil ‘ol me.) But for now, punch your ticket and enter the weirdest wax museum of them all…

The Blind, the Doomed, and the Dead

Ending the month here with a Bob Powell classic from the April 1952 issue of This Magazine is Haunted #4. This one has it all, evil deeds within a weird wax museum, a frightening fun house, and finally a trippy excursion into a warped realm of death that not even Dali could have imagined!
