The Possessor

I think we'll stick with Charlton for a few more posts, and that means more sinister Sanho Kim creepiness as well! This is a neat tale of supernatural evil in a haunted house, and Kim does another great job with the atmospheric, clifftop setting, and those spooky characters of his possessing uniquely cramped, intense faces. From the Jan. '73 issue of The Many Ghosts of Doctor Graves #46... Charlton liked this story so much they reprinted it a few more times, even into the 80's.

Hell House

Stumbled upon a beautiful page of original Sanho Kim art over at Comicartfans HERE, and immediately had to dig up the full story, originally featured in the January 1973 issue of The Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves #36. And even with the familiar old "night in a haunted house inheritance" set-up, and rather abrupt ending, it's still full of chilling specters, and highly atmospheric moments.

The Bloody Mermaid (PART ONE)

JMR kind of spoiled the surprise in the comments of the previous post, but today we begin a two-part minor masterpiece, Sanho Kim's epically eerie, Bloody Mermaid, which took up the entire issue of Ghostly Tales #91 in January of 1972. There certainly isn't enough mermaid horror in the world, and Sanho does an outstanding job with story pacing and atmosphere here. His stylized art technique seems to have improved quite a bit since House of Spiders '69 as well. I'll have the second half for you tomorrow-- so don't swim too far out to sea while waiting!

The House of Spiders

Charlton art regular, Sanho Kim, seemed to me to be a rather acquired taste. I remember as a kid and flipping through these poorly printed comics at the drug store and not finding Kim's style of eerie, otherworldly illustration at all to my liking. Coupled with the oddly cramped lettering and thin line technique, I typically chose to spend my hard earned allowance on an Eerie Pub or Marvel / Atlas reprint. But now in my half century of life, I look back on Sanho's silver age work with a much higher level of astonished analyzation, and find it fascinatingly spooky, even incredible, and highly atmospheric at times.
