Hugo at the Monster Rally (AD)

A fun, comic book style ad for one of the best Kenner hand puppet toys of the 70's --you could even wear the interchangeable disguises on your very own face --it's Hugo the Man of a Thousand Faces! Dracula ("BLYAH!"), Frankie ("HYUCK!"), the Wolfman ("YIPE!"), and heck, even Peter Lorre ("SNERK! SNERK!") showed up for this one! BEHOLD:

I had a Hugo, it's one of the toys I've thought about re-adding to my collection but never did, as I remember not playing with it all that much, but it was a great idea for a toy!

"I'm scared of fleas" got a laugh, and Dracula has his tongue out in every panel!

The art is great. The Frankenstein's Monster is super cool.

Hugo could get a reboot, only this time it would be an app instead of the puppet.

Hugo without the disguises is Lex Luthor, maybe not scary to anyone except the man of steel himself.

I was watching the extra features on Dead of Night (Deathdream) back in April, and discovered that writer/make-up artist (and later director) Alan Ormsby was the guy who invented and pitched the idea of Hugo to Kenner in the first place. I was floored. One of the geniuses behind Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (he's right on the poster!) and Deranged--the very man who hired and mentored Tom Savini himself--invented one of everybody's favorite toys.

This ad is great. And the fact that the kid seems to be dressed up as Ormsby himself in the final frame has to be some kind of coincidence, right?

That’s crazy. I had no idea either.

Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, i.e., prequel to a Christmas Story, is one of those gems a lot of horror people haven't seen. It's dripping with so much menace and you spend so much time waiting for the house of cards to come down. I love that thing. Love to see it mentioned!
