The Plant of Doom

Plants are pretty scary, no? No?! Well then check out this crazy ass creeper classic with fantastic art by Rocco Mastroserio (signed as Marcus Rocke) from the January 1953 issue of Out of the Shadows #7, ...we think maybe you'll change your mind.

Need another spooky tale but still haven't checked out Karswell's other blog? Well now's the perfect time to get caught up on everything else too! Just click the image below:

'Til Death Do Us Part (X2)

Someone over at Standard Comics really liked the " 'Til / Till Death Do Us Part " title, because they used it two issues in a row: the July 1953 issue of Out of the Shadows #9 (Joe Orlando art?), and the October 1953 issue of Out of the Shadows #10. Two interesting tales, with two morbidly satisfying outcomes. (fyi: issue completists, Out of the Shadows #9 is now on THOIA in its entirety.)

Destroy My Enemy

Things have been a bit weird around Kastle Karswell lately, so please allow me to weirden your weekend with a ghostly pirate horror tale from the Oct. '53 issue of Out of the Shadows #10. Argh!

General Moulton and the Devil

A couple of devilish tales from the January 1953 issue of Out of the Shadows #7, featuring treacherous fashion related faux pas o'plenty. And if you're just joining us, we're in the middle of a Standard Comics' Out of the Shadows Fest here at THOIA. Lots more good stuff coming up, including: evil plants, giant snakes, dead wives, ghost pirates, and more!

The Horror of Candle Lodge

Presenting more eerie "believe it or not" style filler terrors from Standard Comics, and the July 1953 issue of Out of the Shadows #9. Really nice art from Nick Cardy on the "Candle Lodge" tale, I think I'm going to do a more indepth retrospect of his work one of these days for sure... but for the next few posts you can expect lots more from the underrated Out of the Shadows series.

Gunnvor the Sorceress

From the July 1953 issue of Out of the Shadows #9, comes this quickie overview of an ancient 'n evil Icelandic vixen turned vengeful dismembered ghost - turned troll - turned giant water dragon or something (umm, 3 pages to cover this much supernatural awesome only makes me wish I could google it for more info, but alas all I get is Warhammer links), anyway the Ralph Mayo art is still pretty spectacular. I padded out this post with the usual cool Standard Comic text story, half page filler and a vintage ad... I'll have more like this all week too.

The Man. The Men. The Morgue.

Showin' you how they do it down at the morgue by bustin' outta June 2010 with a double shot of Atlas crime horror! Our first stiff is from the March 1953 issue of Mystery Tales #9, and fyi: this completes this entire issue here at THOIA (just check the archives), followed by a similarly titled Gene Colan gem of doom from the February 1954 issue of Adventures into Terror #28.
