Zombie! + RECOMMENDED BLOG
I just noticed that Mr. Door Tree posted Stan Lee and Bill Everett's awesome story ZOMBIE! (from the July 1953 issue of Menace #5) in it's entirety on Monday. So for a bonus tale of pre-code horror today I recommend you head on over to his great Golden Age Comic Book Stories blog by clicking HERE (scroll down a bit once you're there), it's a truly excellent post from one of the absolute best blogs on the web! Bookmark it, updates daily...

Candles for the Undead
Here’s a gruesome concept: what happens when you make candles from the tallow of human corpses? Once again Ace pushes the boundaries of good taste for a shocker that somehow still manages to be a tad bit classier than the other publishers, courtesy of some top notch art and writing.

Doom Smoke
I spotlighted Ace Magazines a few months ago with a 7 day tribute and everyone seemed to really enjoy it. So here we go again but we’ll just do 4 days this time, and kicking it all off with a great tale featuring one of the best splash panels I’ve ever seen. Anyone know the artist? [GCD now believes it's Ken Rice. -- Nequam]

The Stroke of 12
Rex Lane, “Solver of the Supernatural” is one of four individual stories featured in issues #21, 22, and 23 of Atlas Comics’ Young Men series. Other stories in this run of the series revolve around a war hero, a race car driver, and a boxer. But to me, Rex Lane’s tales of ghostly hauntings are the best of the lot, as he attempts to disprove the supernatural, but instead always manages to discover that the sinister forces of darkness do indeed exist. With excellent art from George Tuska, today’s entry features a phony séance that turns out to be anything but. Now if only Lane’s catty girlfriend Belle wasn’t so annoying!

The Thing in the Pool
Here’s a nice looking Myron Fass classic with a great cheesecake splash and a weirdly beaked, tentacled creature out for blood! It’s a slick terror tale, though it sure takes the long way around to telling a simple revenge story (10 pages?!) Still a winner though.
