Grave Robinson has a great theme idea for today’s Double Post Saturday--- “…horror comics that salute the fine arts of black magic and death. The fact that each title has the word "nightmare" only increases their relavence as a pairing.” So, welcome to Nightmare Weekend everyone! And if that’s not enough, both stories today come from the back-up pages of Frankenstein Comics. Our first “fine art” tale is a slight nod to H. P. Lovecraft's Pickman's Model, about an artist with a monster as the subject of his "boil" paintings.
From the Summer 1952 issue of Frankenstein Comics #19

Great story.....I'm a big HPL fan and your right this is very much like Pickmans Model.
I didn't realize there were bonus stories in those old Frankenstein comics.
OF THE TWO POSTS THIS ONE IS MORE NIGHTMARISH, GOOD BUILD UP ON THE FIRST 4 PAGES BUT THEN IN THE END IT FEELS LIKE THE STORY VISUALLY DOESN'T MATCH THE TERROR OF THE NARRATIVE AT TIMES. ON THE LAST PAGE WHEN HE SAYS HE RAN BLINDLY UNTIL HE COULD RUN NO MORE, YOU CAN SEE THE BURNING HOUSE ONLY 20 YARDS BEHIND HIM! THE MONSTER ISN'T VERY SCARY EITHER IN HIS RED JUMPSUIT AND HOOP EARRINGS!
STILL, OVERALL GOOD TALE.
I agree with the previous poster, but even with the somewhat standard monster it's still excellent,AIP could've made a great entry in their Poe-Lovecraft-Price series using this as a (Pickman's) model, and the prose is some of the best i've ever read.
I liked it! Are there any other precode stories based on Lovecraft?
That's a good question, I wish I had some answers... possbily someone else out there can give us all some info as I too am very interested.
Anti Atlas Guy?
Brian Hirsh?
Grave Robinson?
not sure about precode hpl stories but gcd lists some 60's warren stuff:
creepy #21 has rats in the walls
eeire #62 has cool air
also....... heavy metal did the dunwich horror in v3 #6
finally last gasp did underground adaptions in skull issues 4 and 5 of the hound, cool air, pickmans' model, rats in the walls, hand of kaa, to a dreamer, and shadow from the abyss
Thanks for the info! If anyone has these issues and would like to submit scans to this blog I'd be more than happy to set the 50's aside for a few days and do an H. P. Lovecraft weekend or something. Just let me know.
And thanks again to Grave Robinson for the scans on this post!
There's quite a good list of HPL comic stories over at Brian Lingard's H.P. Lovecraft in the Comics site...
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much pre-code that's not EC. :(
Unfortunately I can't help with scans - hope someone can though... I'd love to see an HPL weekend!
Make that H.P. Lovecraft in the Comics. Oops!
