Shut-In

Ah, what the Hell… after Friday’s great response to Holly’s Hobby let’s just make it a Twisted Tales Weekend. So from the same March 1984 issue of Twisted Tales #7, also written by Bruce Jones but this time illustrated by Liberatore, it’s a disturbing, look into the mundane existence of a helpless, disabled old man. This one comes with a THOIA “ADULTS ONLY” warning, and contains very graphic violence, some mature and immature situations, and sexy bare boobs.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

If you want to see a movie that is very similar to this tale, check out Crispin Glover's It Is Fine! Everthing Is Fine (2007.) It's a semi-autobiographical, psycho-sexual tale about a man with severe cerebral palsy and a fetish for girls with long hair. Part horror film, part exploitation picture and part documentary of a man who cannot express his sexuality in the way he desires.

The story goes way beyond pre-code. Its an entirely plausible story showing what goes on in the mind of a total paralytic.

Well, that was depressing. >:(

Great story. When did the day-dream began? When Kenny was at the door? When he pulled the knife? Was it all in his mind? In either regard this was a very sad story.

The clear and bright art was so spot on.

Of course this is way beyond any pre-code stuff. Or post-code. You just didn´t got such tales from DC before Vertigo or from Marvel.

Great selection, Karswell

WOW. DEFINITELY NEED TO GET THIS ISSUE, THAT WAS THE CRAZIEST STORY EVER POSTED HERE!! WELL MAYBE NOT THE CRAZIEST BUT DAMN............

I'VE HEARD ABOUT THE CRISPIN GLOVER FILMS, A FREIND OF MINE SAW 'WHAT IS IT' AND SAID IT WAS TERRIBLE BUT WHAT DOES SHE KNOW.

First of all, thanks a lot for giving us more Twisted Tales, Karswell. :)

Wow, what a demented and depressing yarn! The underlying theme of this issue seems to be 'Don't trust the elderly.' Being trapped inside your own body, unable to move or communicate with the people around you is a fate worse than death, IMHO. And those teens were real jerks, so I can definitely relate with poor Mr. Bartlett.

Wow, that really is pretty depressing. I agree, 50's stuff can't compete in terms of unsavoriness(although some Harvey stories come close!)because of the sense of fun we read them with. Really nice art, too. And I can't believe no one has said "Oh my god, he killed Kenny!" yet.

Are comics this transgressive ever published in the trigger-warning/safe room culture we live in now?
Everything I've ever seen of Liberatore's is beautiful and transgressive.
He had this series called Ranxerox that was translated from Italian and published in Heavy Metal magazine.... hey! I just noticed my comment on this post months ago.
I didn't recognize my name...
Re-reads!!
That's the beauty of the old 4 to 7 page format.
It's like a song... something you can return to over and over.
You can't do that with the graphic novel format.
