The Corpse Who Prowled by Night

Today’s the big wrap-up to Web of Evil #15. And before you throw up your hands and shout “Scooby-Doo ending!” you’ll find there’s one additional, clever little twist in this before the horrific conclusion nails the coffin lid down tight with a lasting shivery note. I hope everyone enjoyed seeing this issue in it’s entirety, and remember you can see more complete issues the first week of every month right here at The Horrors of it All! It’s my new thing...

From the June 1954 issue of Web of Evil #15

I probably don't need to mention Tobe Hooper's excellent film POLTERGEIST here so to tie this post instead with a lesser known horror film of similar theme I encourage you to check out WITCHCRAFT ('64) starring Lon Chaney and Jack Hedley. It's another very well made, super atmospheric British classic about what happens if you mess with a graveyard and it's unhappy residents.

The Corpse Who Prowled By Night reads like an early comics version of CSI.

Karswell, this issue was awesome. Thanks, buddy!

"AIEEEEOOO!"

Some of the greatest screams in comics on display right here! Wow, what a wild story! I would gladly pay to see a big-screen version of this one, even with the Scooby-Doo ending! Of course Mystery, Inc. never solved the case to find out the "ghost" was actually a serial killer with a garden of corpses in his front yard. Though they definitely should have, at least once!

So many great moments:
"The Vulture of Shadow Valley!" What a b-movie title!

"I bet they don't even have a bowling alley!" No ten-pen? OMG LAME!

"Suffering ditch diggers!" See? UNIONIZE NOW! :)

Tombestoned on pg 4! La Brea-ed on pg 5! AWESOME kill scenes!

"A kill-crazed corpse would kill anyone!" Can't argue with THAT logic!

Awesome post, Karswell--one of my (many) favorites so far!

THIS WAS HANDS DOWN THE BEST STORY FROM THIS ISSUE IN MY OPINION, EVEN THOUGH THERES NO REAL SUPERNATURAL KILLER ITS STILL VERY WELL TOLD AND LIKE THE OTHER 3 STORIES HAS REALLY GREAT ART. THE ENDING IS ABRUPTLY SUPERB TOO.

Great comments from everyone... my biggest question is who did the art on the four stories in this issue? It all looks very much like the same hand responsible, and whoever he/she is/was they are/were very very good/great.

>reads like an early comics version of CSI.

Totally, or even a darker Funky Phantom episode.

>Tombestoned! La Brea-ed!

I say we all start petitioning now to see that these terms be added to Webster's Dictionary next year.

>THE ENDING IS ABRUPTLY SUPERB TOO.

Yes, you have to appreciate a well written story that knows how to save the biggest surprise until the very last possible moment and then end it all without dragging on and on.

Excllent story!i almost wish you didn't mention the ending as nothing implied it was a whodoneit, but still, that image of a corpse chucking it's tombstone through a truck window into a guy's face....may just be the single most awesome murder i've seen in a comic book...ever.

What a let down. I'm surprised Perry didn't say, "And I would have got away with it if it hadn't been for you meddling construction workers."

I agree with horror pariah, though. Awesome killing with the tombstone. *gasp! Choke!*
