Beyond the Past!

As mentioned in yesterday’s comment section, Brian Hirsch submitted two more stories from Charlton’s great The Thing series, so I thought that for the remaining two Saturdays in April I would designate those days as “Thing Days.” And today’s efficient invocation of evil, though a bit short, still delivers a weird wallop of dreaded Necronomicon horror, (as well as a couple nice leggy lingerie panels!)

From Nov/Dec 1953 issue of The Thing #11

Thanks again to Brian Hirsch for the scans.

OOOOOOOO, ANOTHER ICKY FINAL PANEL! I LOVE IT! ALSO APPRECIATE THE FIRST PANEL ON PAGE 4 OVERHEAD SHOT WHERE THE COLORIST FILLED IN HER BACKSIDE WITH A FLESH TONE INSTEAD OF WHITE FOR FABRIC SO YOU CAN SEE HER TUSHY! OF COURSE THIS MAKES WHAT SHE'S WEARING THE PERFECT CLOTHING TO GO SEARCHING FOR FATHER IN.

Awesome!the whole story is a tribute to Lovecraft, even the town and valley looks like how i always envisioned the streets of Arkham or Innsmouth.most people see Lovecraft's stories as posh gothic horror,me i've always seen them as moldy, drippy and decaying, and this story completely captured that.as for the daughter, stop binge dieting girl!.

Daughter's favorite book is the Incestronomicon.

>i've always seen them as moldy, drippy and decaying

With an extra helping of barnacles and seaweed slime...

You have a great site. It wasn't so long ago that any non EC precode comics were dismissed as trash. It's great to see these classic comics get the respect they deserve.
This story was great. The thing was one of the best of the precode books. How about some of Steve Ditko's Charlton art?

I agree, and this is one of the main reasons why I started this blog, to put the spotlight on all the OTHER overlooked pre-code publications that are still constantly ignored for practically the last 50 years.

I'll ask the guy who submitted these Thing stories, unfortunantly I don't have a single issue in my own collection.

Thanks for stopping by!

A short and sweet story. And what odd colors in every panel....one wouldn't see that in black and white reprint books.

WHOA. That last panel ... the idea of finding old dad like that is a real punch in the gut.

They really knew what they were doing!

That was great. I love the puddle of dad at the end.

I'm not so sure--he wasn't big on carnal lusts and tushies and such. But I AM!

Great tale here--I love the art on the close up of Dad's lips while he speaks the damnable phrases. And that Linda! ROWR! I wish those sweaters would come back in style. And she looks familiar...OMG, it's "Joanie Loves Cthulhu!" ;)

I love the errata on his translation of the warning too: "When he is wet...er, WAKENED, he will never sleep..."

Another Wonderful THING.
