The String of Pearls

Our story today comes from Hank Chapman and Ogden Whitney. To be honest I don’t really know much about Whitney except apparently he’s a favorite among collectors and for obvious reasons. His lay-outs are very dynamic, and full of subtle elegance and detail, even in a weird terror tale like this. I really love the title treatment too.

From the March 1952 issue of Suspense #15

WOW THIS IS NICELY DONE. EVEN THE STORYTELLING FOR A 5 PAGER IS VERY DYNAMIC TOO. WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE WHITNEY IS YOU HAVE SOME.

Agree about the color,it would have made a great Mario Bava film, and the goofy, but cool octopus ghost gives it a Lovecraft vibe, great story too, love how neither of the 2 leads is very sympathetic, and the structure and pacing really does work as a "suspense" title.

I do have more Whitney stories in my collection and will definitely post other examples in the near future.

And for those interested, Wikipedia has a page on him here:

Great art, clunky story.

Sheesh--LA cops!

"You're rich; you're white--yep, she must have been strangled by an octopus!!"

That was one of those times when both of the characters got what they deserved. Gerald was offed by his greedy wife, and she was offed by the octopus ghost. Cool!
