3 Hellish Harvey classics for you today as we're finally beyond the halfway point of this damned Devilcember month of evil! First up: Bob Powell's "Cavern of the Doomed" from the August '52 issue of Tomb of Terror #3, followed by "Pact with the Devil" (text story) from the Dec '51 issue of Chamber of Chills #24, and finally another satanically sweaty (and bloody) Rudy Palais tale "Devil's Due" from the July '52 issue of Chamber of Chills #10.

i had deviled eggs for Thanksgiving and now all this- i guess i asked for it...
WOW THE ENTIRE LAST PAGE OF THE POWELL STORY IS AMAZING!! LOVE THE PALAIS ART TOO, GREAT STUFF FROM HARVEY !
So that's what the welcome brochures at Carlsbad Caverns don't tell you! And to think we were planning on revisiting soon. :-O Think I'll pass.
Powell and Palais... that's pretty much what it's all about! Awesome post!
Amazing artwork. Love the Powell stuff.
I'm surprised there aren't more comments on this post because I think these are some of the best stories you have given us so far this month. Beautiful artwork that exemplfies the wide range of Harvey horror artists, Powell and Palais were both obviously and incredibly talented.
Thank you!
>i guess i asked for it...
You always ask for it Prof!
>So that's what the welcome brochures at Carlsbad Caverns don't tell you!
Haha, they have to make their money somehow in souls delivered!
To Mike, Hex, and The Anons-- I agree! With everything...
Karswell: Loved both but love the Powell story best! His depiction of the Countess is just so incredibly sultry and evil. I loved how gleefully vengeful the ghosts of her dead lovers are: "it is my turn to handle the chains!" "You cannot atone for you sins. You can only suffer for them."
What a great depiction of the afterlife for the damned. Yellow slim covering everything, lapping into the river of the damned where unnamed furry creatures swim that eat your heart out. “Darling, darling, darling . . . “
Powell always seems to operate at the next level. Great post, as always. -- Mykal
I ALREADY COMMENTED ON THIS POST BUT HAD TO ADD THAT I TOTALLY AGREE WITH MYKAL, POWELL WAS TOTALLY ON ANOTHER LEVEL FROM MOST ARTIST OF THE TIME, ALL HIS STORYS HAVE SOME COOL DETAIL THAT MOST PEOPLE WOULD NEVER EVEN DREAM OF!!
Well I already commented too but what the Hell, it's my blog... yes, Powell - another level - he really excelled at horror, plenty of other examples here at THOIA too for anyone who doubts The Power of Powell, just use the handy search engine up thar at the top of the page for more.
Coming Next: Flash Forward Week!?!
These examples show why Harvey was #2 to EC in terms of quality stories and art IMHO. Powell, Palais, Nostrand are all fantastic!
