The Ballad of Doc Satan

Last day of January and I reckon we’ll wrap it up with a Flash Forward Time Machine trip to the 70’s (via covered wagon) with a Satanic bonanza from the Dec-Jan ‘72/73 issue of Weird Western Tales #15 featuring art by the always great Bill Draut. Lots of excellent moments here, it’s just too bad ‘ol smilin' Doc Satan didn’t pay any return visits or get his own comic series, I sho’ do love him and his no nonsense ways of unflinchin' evil.

See ya’lls in February, got lotsa good’uns lined up fer yew (including more trips in the Time Machine!) Ya’ll come back now, ya hear…

TOMORROW: Matt Fox! Larry Woromay! AND Al Luster??!!

Awww, My First Swipe

Yesterday you saw an incredible illustration by Mr. C; now today you get to see one by me! Okay, mine is not so incredible, and I was probably only 8 or 9 years old when I drew this sometime in the 70’s, but if you’ve already read The Ballad of Doc Satan post today you’ll see just how inspired I was by one of the demons in that tale (see page 4,bottom panel.) Kinda cute don’tcha thinks?

AIEEEEE! The Teeth!

Last week I received an incredible donation from Mr. Cavin in the form of American dollars and Vietnamese dong (thank you again!) ...it was his jaw dropping way of saying thanks for all the free daily horror. And so Mr. C, since you are also a collector of "scream dialogue" in comics, I dedicate this appropriately titled shrieking classic especially to you.

From the August 1952 issue of Strange Suspense Stories #2

TOMORROW: We end January with another Flash Forward to the 70’s, (or is it actually a flash backwards to the Old West?) Whatever… it’s got demons, melting people, and a giant flaming skeleton so don’t miss it.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

And who knew that Mr. Cavin is also a top notch doodler?! Included with his generous donation was this stunning pen illustration he created for me--- on the back of a Korean Airlines cocktail napkin! How fantastic! We surely learn something new about people everyday.

Thanks again Mr. C, you are once again further proof that THOIA has the greatest readership in all of the blogosfear.

The Castle of Fear / The Disbeliever

Today we have two seriously messed-up Monster-Ramas from the February 1953 issue of Weird Mysteries #3 …both of which can be suitably filed away in the old banged up "WTF Cabinet." And FYI: for the 5th and final tale from this issue you’ll need to head over to Chuck’s Comic Book Catacombs sometime today by clicking HERE. Thanky Chucky!

The Disbeliever

We haven't seen killer ants around here at THOIA since World War III With the Ants. No wait, actually it was the last time the Orkin guy came by (dude's a bad ass with the bug drugs.) Anyway, I think in February I may try to cook up an "All Insect Week" or something. Anyone got any ideas or recomendations?

Nice ending, eh? Huh??!

While the Iron Was Hot / Hand of Fate

Okay, first I need to apologize… I promised you 3 days of Voodoo, but then yesterday I got the February 1953 issue of Weird Mysteries #3 in the mail and man oh man, I just couldn’t wait to post this notoriously icky stuff instead. And each hair brained tale is sort of short too so today and tomorrow will be double posts, (plus the 5th and final story can be viewed over at Chuck’s Comic Book Catacombs on Thursday.)

And yeah I know, I also said no more full issue presentations this month too, didn’t I? I’m a liar!!

Plus, the insanely spooky cover of this issue featuring a very bloody beheading!

TOMORROW: Bugs. Monsters. And a Tigerman.

++++++++++++++++++++++

Hand of Fate

And here's the second story from Weird Mysteries #3--- and WOW, check out that splash! Does it look familiar? If you recognized it as a swipe from the cover of the September 1951 issue of Mister Mystery #1 then you are definitely a true blue, 100% Pre-Coder!

(For the uninitiated, check the very bottom of today’s post for the Mister Mystery #1 cover and compare.)

FYI: if you want to read the “Hand” story from that issue of Mister Mystery #1 (chock full of an astounding amount of swiped panels too!) then check the THOIA Archives HERE!

Horribly Beautiful

Of all the bat shit crazy stories about sister rivalries, this one is the bat shit craziest. Seriously, this one has it all: extreme acne, acid in the face, Satanism and occult vengeance… but my favorite line comes “many soft murmurs and sighs later… " ?!! Jesus, why not just say he got a BJ already!! He sure does beg for it.

The She-Beast (DVD NEWS)

It’s not my favorite Barbara Steele fright flick, but here comes La Sorella di Satana (aka The She-Beast ’66) on DVD April 28th from Dark Sky Films. Featuring an “all new audio commentary” (with who?) but more importantly a sparkling new 16x9 'Scope transfer taken from “extremely rare vault materials,” this is the perfect opportunity to throw out that crummy old public domain print and upgrade!

Skulls of Doom

The bad news is it's Monday mourn… but the good news is you’re about to get 3 days of vicious Voodoo madness from Farrell Publications! Fans of Pappy’s Golden Age Comics blog might remember this crazy story that he posted back in October HERE. His version is the black and white reprint from the March 1969 issue of Eerie Publication’s Terror Tales #7. It also features some slight, additional gore and other art adjustment / upgrades.

The original color version presented here today comes from the November 1953 issue of Voodoo #12.

The Devil’s Clock

For the rest of the month let's just ditch the full issue presentation theme, I think we kicked off January AND 2009 big enough at this point, don’t you? But this weekend there is still a theme, and that theme is--- clocks! Evil clocks. Haunted clocks. Clocks of Doom! If you keep saying the word “clocks” enough it totally sounds like the least scary thing on the planet. That is of course unless it’s --- The Devil’s Clock! AIEEEE!!

From the November 1952 issue of Tales of Horror #3

And for more pre-code terror from Brown & Gantz, check out the expertly illustrated, but superbly stupid Purple Claw adventures located in the THOIA Archives HERE!

TOMORROW: The ULTIMATE Clock in Horror!

If somehow a clock is not terrifying enough for you, then how about Junior's Television? Apparently it works just fine without being plugged in (look closely.) And dear lard, please tell me that's not supposed to be a projection of Popeye?!!

Even scarier is an ad promising you "popularity" by simply sticking a harmonica into your pie hole for 15 minutes. I suppose if that actually worked you really would have to be marvelous...

The Pit and the Pendulum

We wrap up our Poe Fest this week with the second THOIA appearance of The Pit and Pendulum (the first time was last May with the Beware #10 version HERE.) Today’s story though comes from the Fall 1952 issue of Nightmare #2, and is illustrated by the truly great Everett Raymond Kinstler. (NOTE: take a look at page two, panel three--- it's Vincent Price appearing a full 9 years BEFORE starring in Roger Corman's film of the same name!)

I hope everyone enjoyed this admiration filled glimpse into the mind of the original Master of Horror, Mr. Edgar Allan Poe. Happy 200th Birthday Day old boy!

And once again I want to thank Todd Hunter for all the great Classics Illustrated issue scans this week... and another round of applause to my gracious fellow bloggers: Admiral David Tackett at Quasar Dragon, Princess Kitty LeClaw at Killer Kittens from Beyond the Grave, and Sir Chuck Wells at The Comic Book Catacombs for hosting THOIA story submissions for our Poe Week (plus an additional set of Devil Horns to Kitty for her sweet as Hell tribute to THOIA yesterday too.)

Tagged!

Amazing Alan over at the endlessly fun Robot Nine blog “tagged” me recently, and the game goes down like this: Enter your hard drive - go to the fourth folder - pull out the fourth image file - post it. Lucky for me the fourth folder on my C Drive is reserved for my client Big Dumb Rock Productions who I create concert posters for occasionally, and the fourth file was a 45 Grave design I created for them a few years back (featuring art I lifted from the cover of the July 1952 issue of Black Cat Mystery #37!)

FYI: I’ve been thinking about printing these up and selling them, if anyone is interested just drop me a line at karswell@hotmail.com for info.

And as most tagging games require, I must now pick 4 lucky souls to enter their own hard drives and go fourth folder - fourth file - post image. But! I hate having to choose (and I love breaking rules) so I leave it wide open for anyone who wants to play… just be sure to drop me and Alan a line so we can check it out on your own blog. Have fun!

The Fall of the House of Usher

Well, my inability to add numbers correctly has suddenly come to light (again), and it turns out that YESTERDAY was THOIA’s 1000th post. Guess I need a vacation or something. But no biggie really, maybe I’ll get it right on the 2000th post... and instead of dwelling on it, how about another Poe tale?

From the melancholy August 1947 issue of Classics Illustrated #40

TOMORROW: Our final day of Edgar Allan Poe classics!

And as our current theme has proven, one Poe tale a day is never enough! So head on over to the Comic Book Catacombs today where Chuck is waiting for you with open coffins, and--- The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar!

We’re celebrating Edgar Allan Poe’s 200th birthday (Jan 19th) all this week, and here’s another cryptacular classic from the June 1951 issue of Classics Illustrated #84. And not only that, but in my backwards ass ways of addition I thought tomorrow was the 1000th THOIA post, when actually TODAY is! So where's my cake? The Life of Riley vs. Swamp Monsters

As we begin a 4-day look at the January 1954 issue of Beware #7 in it’s entirety, Keith Smith returns to the horrifying halls of THOIA with a kick-off comparison of what happens to a pre-code Myron Fass cannibal cooker when it gets re-made 16 years later (see below) by Dick Ayers for Eerie Publishing.

*Also, be sure to check out Keith’s Index / Collector’s Guide for Eerie Publishing, now online! (More information after our first story.)

++++++++

*Keith Smith says: “I have created an index / collector's guide for Eerie Publications that may be of interest to pre-code horror fans. The guide can be viewed at: http://www.enjolrasworld.com/

For those who don't know, Eerie Publications produced black and white horror comics from 1966 to 1982. Their stories consisted almost entirely of reprinted or redrawn pre-code horror stories from a number of publishers. The index identifies the original source for the stories (where I know it) and has a cross-index that lists them by the original pre-code publisher and title. The index also has background info on the company, art credits, background info on the company, golden-age and silver-age artists and publishers, etc...”

For anyone that thrilled to the "lost" story last Thursday (Tryst with Terror) I’ve got two more mind boggling pre-code fem-bot tales for you, one today and the other on Sunday. I also apologize to you Rudy Palais fans as this is the first story I’ve posted from him in nearly a year (last Palais post: The Crypt of Death, Jan 12th, 2008.) His truly weird, sweaty, drippy style is so wonderfully grotesque and repulsive, but at the same time look how fantastic he illustrates the female form too! The Mark of the Witch

One day a week this month will be designated “Time Machine Day”, and what I mean by that is once a week throughout January we’ll propel ourselves from the Golden Age Era right into the funky future, 20+ years, to see how our favorite 50’s pre-code “Horror Masters” are making out in the Silver Age 70’s (and beyond.) Sound fun? And who is more worthy to kick off this exciting expedition than Alex Toth with a superbly Satanic, moody offering from the Oct-Nov 1970 issue of DC’s Witching Hour #11.

And of course for pre-code terrors by Alex Toth, check the THOIA archives by using the handy search engine at the top of the page.
TOMORROW: Back to the 50's!

(*NOTE: All ads and bonus materials on Time Machine Days will also be from the future!)

Plus! A cool Sid Greene quickie from the winter 1969-’70 issue of Witching Hour #6

Other Masters to be featured this month: Jerry Grandenetti, Bernard Baily, Bill Draut, and more! If this THOIA concept proves popular enough maybe we’ll do it every month. Or not, it’s up to you guys really. I just thought it’d be fun to mix things up a little around here occasionally… there's definitely some good horror from the Silver Age too.

Have some suggestions? Faves to feature? Scans of your own to share? Drop us a line, THOIA is YOUR blog too!

Death Dives Deep

The rarities continue, (and no, you're not color blind!) In 1954, Standard Comics had the entire 15th issue of Adventures into Darkness practically completed, but with the Comics Code snarling down their backs they apparently felt the need to cease production of their fab line of horror titles, (including The Unseen, Out of the Shadows etc...) The stories you’ll read this week starting today remained surpressed for 30+ years until October 1985, when Eclipse Comics bought the rights to reprint them in their cool Three-Dimensional Seduction of the Innocent #1 issue.

BELOW: the intended cover for Adventures into Darkness #15.

So, for the next 3 days you’ll be seeing the entire “lost” issue of Adventures into Darkness #15 here at THOIA (minus color and the distracting 3-D process), plus one very appropriate tale called "That Stray Cat" hosted by the ever gracious Princess Kitty at her Killer Kittens blog HERE. I hope you enjoy this stuff!

Someone commented about yesterday’s Nodel and Alascia story by saying it was like something from Black Magic, and today’s story is no exception… featuring a smattering of Kirby influence in the splash, as well as the demented creature design, most notably the thick, shadow-filled inking style that is frightening, yet playful.

City of the Living Dead!

One year ago today we kicked off January 2008 with “The Dead Who Walk” comic, now bare witness as we unearth another one-shot rarity to help usher in 2009. Today’s 1952 issue of City of the Living Dead from Avon Periodicals isn’t a full length single tale like The Dead Who Walk, but instead the usual collection of individual tales in classic pre-code terror tale mode, highlighted by today’s title story from A.C. Hollingsworth.

Enjoy! More details follow today's tale... and Happy New Year too!
