The Haunts of Devil's Lake

Kicking off 2018 with a jolting Jim McLaughlin tale of terror, from the April 1952 issue of Web of Mystery #8, concerning a beautiful indian princess and her tribe of living dead-- that live under a lake! Really nice art, and the story is fast paced and fun, but is it really as wild as it sounds? See for yourself, as we load up the fishin' gear 'n fear and head deep into the Canadian wilderness for 6.66 pages of underwater weirdness! (Cover art by Lou Cameron)

A very Happy New Year to you and yours, good Mr. Karswell... !!!
(also... did you choose the name of "Karswell" from the character in "Curse of the Demon"...??)

This is one of those fun puzzle-adventure stories. I like how much text somebody gets out in a situation where nobody would (1) have the time or (2) describe what they are already seeing.

"ARGH! Get away from me -- you ghastly rotting creature! Go back to the much and slime of the lake bottom!"

I get the ARGH. That's what I'd say, too!

If it wasn't for NoTLD, we'd still be stuck with the ghost/zombie paradox that so many of these comics have.

Of course! Dr. Julian Karswell and I are very close, though somewhat distant cousins ;)

Happy New Year everyone!

I don't recall ever seeing Indian / Native American zombies before, so that was interesting. I liked the skull for a thought bubble panel. Indian princess was cool. It was worth a read. Thanks for posting.

I had the same reaction as Brian Barnes to "you ghastly, rotting creature!"
It isn't such a long or "purple" phrase, but it is considering what's going on when he says it.

I love how colorful the lake is, especially in the middle row of panels on page two. It's like the whole environment is made up of kaleidoscopic coral reefs or merry oil slicks. I mean, for a horror lake, this was certainly very beautiful.

Happy 2018, everybody!

'Devil's lake' - 'Execution Cliff': this must be a headache when puting together postcards.
The First Nations zombies are inspired.
