Claws of Horror

Got a theme developin' here, so change your litter box and batten down your fur (it's standing on end again) it's time to head deep into the jungle of terror for a purrfectly wild weirdie from the January 1954 issue of Horrific #9 (artwork by Marty Elkin.)

Nice. I could do with a little less of the muddy, uncontrolled crosshatching blobs floating here and there in the frames; but I love the overcooked character expressions, raccoon eyes, and two-toned faces. I love the panels overpopulated with figures at odd angles to one another (placing the girl on the diagonal slab in the foreground of so many of the frames was excellent!). I love any floating eye panel. While the story here is a little breathless about its perfectly obvious reveal, I think the whole thing is operating with a jazzy head of steam that really works.

And that's one of my favorite Don Heck covers, too. The colors are just amazing.

Love the artwork, but the story is a retelling of "Men With Fangs," from Atlas' SUSPENSE #25, 1952.

That story can be seen at THE BLOG AT THE END OF TIME for November 5, 2009. Here is the link: http://theblogattheendoftime.blogspot.com/2009/11/fangs-for-nuttin-joe-sinnotts-men-with.html

You yourself admired the story, remember Karswell?

Actually, I love 'em both! Don't make me choose!!

Please keep up the spectacular job you're doing, Karswell!!!

"Humanoid Vampire Cats"? Why even bother with that explanation? "Were Swamp Cats!" "Jaguar Fanged Folk!"

Another fun one, the relentless close ups are great, and make up for the amateurishness of the art in places. Predictable, but we got two hosts!

One thing I like about this art nullifies my usual complaint of artists not doing any research. It's "the orient", but there's stuff from everywhere, India, China, Afica, Medieval castles, Greek columns! With all that, no wonder vampire-were-cats are running around!

Unoriginal or not, this "tail" had me looking at my two cats with suspicion. Thanks for the fine postings as always, Karswell!

As we edge closer to the probability of having to put my cat to sleep soon, I'm posting cat stories for the next however long I got it in me...
