The Weird Dead

The last story of February 2009, as well as the last story from the February 1953 issue of Voodoo #6, and thanks again to Brian Hirsch for the scans. Reading this tale I was reminded of the Jack Kirby story called The Feathered Serpent from Black Magic #3. I wasn’t really familiar with this ancient deity legend until I did a wikipedia search and realized it’s the same thing as Quetzalcoatl (for more, or less, info about this see the Larry Cohen movie from 1982 of the same name by clicking the Q movie link after the story.)

TOMORROW: We kick off March with another full issue presentation, but you’ll have to come back in the morn to find out what it is. See ya then…

"You're lying, Matt!"

Ah, the pearls of bored comic writers. Why, I'll bet the characters themselves were having a hard time keeping straight face with some of this dialog.

"Am I walking, fool?"

And I gotta learn how to talk like these pre-code guys. The cowardly Fools! Maybe we shouldn't fool with it, Fool! Don't be a fool, Fool, it's every fool for himself, now. You know I ain't gettin' in no airplane, Hannibal.

S'long, saps!

I was hoping the treasure would turn out to be baby feathered serpents. Oh, well.

Ever notice how incredibly cut throat and money hungry archaeologists are in pre-code comics? Every one of them will kill all the others (and just about anybody else) at the drop of a hat. It's like they're all ex-cons instead of Phd's. Makes you wonder about what we DON'T know about Louis Leakey.

And am I crazy, or is there some musical notation written on "Zabo's" back in the splash page?

And finally, I love that one eye peering in on Matt at the end of he story. Guess the artist was pretty sick of drawing that big dopey muppet.

COOL STORY...... SILLY LOOKING MONSTER BUT A REALLY HEARTLESS LEAD CHARACTER WHO GETS EVERYTHING HE DESERVES TOTALLY MAKES IT. NOW I WANNA WATCH Q AGAIN.

THANKS KARSWELL AND BRIAN!!

I love Zabo! one of the best pre-code monsters i've seen. There's also a PRC film called the FLYING SERPENT with Quetz in it, but i don't think it was any good if i recall my Creature Features correctly. I also wonder if Zabo's gotten hungry again: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/malaysia/4701906/Photograph-shows-giant-snake-lurking-in-Borneo-river.html-

Most certainly a hoax, but.....

>S'long, saps!

You know he's a tough guy when he calls you both a "sap" and a "chump" all in the same letter. A real man's man!

>I was hoping the treasure would turn out to be baby feathered serpents.

Not a bad idea Todd, get working on The Weird Dead Part 2 pronto! And make sure the sequel explains WTF the title has to do with anything.

>am I crazy, or is there some musical notation written on "Zabo's" back in the splash page?

Anon, you're having Kukla, Fran, and Ollie flashbacks again.

>this one actually had me in suspense

Was it Super Suspense or just everyday ordinary suspense? Like right now I'm just in everyday ordinary suspense waiting for your answer, Prof.

>NOW I WANNA WATCH Q AGAIN.

Yeah, me too I guess... I remember the stop-mo FX being decent, better than The Giant Claw ('57) anyway.

>I love Zabo! one of the best pre-code monsters i've seen.

Awwww, a match made in heaven HP.

TOMORROW: Bill Everett Returns to THOIA!!

Before I write the sequel: Matt is holding a gun at the end of page seven. I know Zabo is supposed to be a god, but if you were at a dead end with a hungry monster headed right at you, would you get rid of your gun and just try to be tasty? Or did the gun turn into a torch between pages seven and eight through unknown means? Either way, this was premeditated suicide. Marital problems or something.
