Someone emailed me on Saturday with a few questions and I thought I’d post them here today for all of you pre-code experts out there to chime in. To be honest, Number One has me seriously drawing a blank… and of course there are multiple opinions for Number Two, seems like it would be more interesting to get an assortment of thoughts.
(Please note that this is NOT A CONTEST.) Here are the questions:
1.) Which comic had a picture of a Beefeater discovering "a bleedin' 'ead"?
2.) What are the goriest pre-code horror comic panels of all time?
(Panel from Greed's Grisly Treasure, from the January 1953 issue of Baffling Mysteries #13. Read the story HERE!)
Thanks to Mike H for the answer to question #1, Roly-Poly Comics #14 from 1945... gor-blimey!

The bleedin' 'ead is from ROLY POLY COMICS #14 (1946) It's pictured in TALES TOO TERRIBLE TO TELL #3.
What's that punch panel from?? It's awesome!

It's from the January 1953 issue of Baffling Mysteries #13, the story is called Greed's Grisly Treaure... I posted it back in Sept here:

And thanks for the Roly Poly answer governor!
Some of the goriest panels I've seen come from issues of.......
Beware
Weird Mysteries
Mister Mystery
Tomb of Terror
Mysterious Adventures
Dark Mysteries.
The final panels of the EC story "Foul Play" are my choice.
You rarely see panels this disturbing even in modern comics. Sure new comics are gory but without the touch of a really talented artist it doesn't have as much impact.
Dungeon of Doom from Chamber of Chills #6 with the girl in the disintergrating machine: http://thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.com/2007/08/dungeon-of-doom.html
Chamber of Chills #8 story Headless Horror! has some really bloody impaling panels: http://thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.com/2007/09/headless-horror.html
Mysterious Adventures #18 story Bottom's Up has a nice axe blade in the side of the head panel: http://thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.com/2007/09/bottoms-up.html
The final panel in The Gossips from Mister Mystery #13 is a real head turner as well: http://thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.com/2007/10/gossips.html
Curse of Zamboori-Mr Mystery, Horror of the Mixed Torsos-Dark Mysteries, the Hunter and the Hunted and Ice Man COmeth-Mysterious Adventures, Trapped-Fight Against Crime
The Comic Book Book described a story depicting "mummies that sucked the guts out of people through their mouths." Does anyone know which story that was?
>"mummies that sucked the guts out of people through their mouths." Does anyone know which story that was?
I've read this before too and totally wonder if this really is an actual story or not... it could have just been an exaggeration point being made about all other 50's pre-code comics besides EC.
