What are you watching on Halloween? (LIST)

We did the readers list, now how about a movie one? What are you watching to get in the mood for Halloween? Most of us here typically watch fright films all year round, but what are the films that sum it all up for you and really get you excited around the end of October? My tastes are old school: Creature From the Black Lagoon, The Fly, Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, Ghost and Mr. Chicken, Curse of the Demon... I do so love the first Phantasm film, Evil Dead and The Thing though too of course. So let’s hear it, your TOP FIVE FAVORITE HORROR FILMS for Halloween.

I like my horror movies like I like my horror comics... old skool!

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
The Cat and the Canary (1927)
Bride of Frankenstein
Night/Curse of the Demon
The Haunting (1963, not the awful remake!)

This year though, I've decided to go all witchy and watch City of the Dead (Horror Hotel) and Night of the Eagle (Burn, Witch, Burn!).

Typcially I like to re-watch some classics around Halloween, Universal stuff, Hammer, or 70's horror like TCM and Phantasm, but I don't have anything set in stone or any traditions really.

This year i've been trying to watch some of the MGM/FOX midnight movie double features that were recently released.
I re-watched the underrated Spanish zombie classic "THE LIVING DEAD @ MANCHESTER MORGUE aka LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE" dir. by Jorge Grau the other night.

still love it!

p.s. yeah, you can't get anymore Halloweenie than Halloween III either-- i dont care what anyone says! Karswell agrees!

Yeah, what exactly is the big complaint with Halloween 3, because it doesn't have Mike Myers in it? Who gives a shit... Season of the Witch is still a very good horror movie with a great concept--- killer Halloween masks! I quit using the term "guilty pleasure" when talking about it because I suddenly realized I'm not guilty to like a cool movie. If Carpenter had stuck with his original plan and made a different Halloween themed movie every year instead of bringing back Mike Myers for those unbearable sequels then we'd have a whole slew of cool movies to watch instead of Halloween 4, 5, and 6 that nobody wants to watch.

My wife and I watch the same thing every year as we pass out candy.

We try to keep it kid friendly as our TV is right next to our front door and don't want to scar the kids with boobs, cussing or gore.

1.The Nightmare before Christmas
2.It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
3. Trick or Treat (Donald Duck Cartoon)
4. Scary Godmother Halloween Spooktakular.
5. Once the kiddies are done we'll pop in something with cussing, boobs and gore. We usually try for something we have not seen yet.

Halloween is usually watch on Oct. 1st to get us in the mood.

Great Choices Mr. Benjamin Hall- I love "trick or treat" w/ Donald Duck! add the Disney adaptation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow to my list too.

Like you mentioned in your intro, I also watch most of this stuff throughout the year, but I guess the following is what I most associate with Halloween: the first 3 Halloween films, Night of the Living Dead, Phantasm, Disney's Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and either Curse of the Demon, or Bride of Frankenstein.

I did happen to watch Monster Squad, and Kiss Meets the Phantom with my 11 year old daughter as a sort of early Halloween double feature. She seemed to enjoy both, although she was somewhat put off and/or mystified by the constant tongue wagging of Gene Simmons. We agreed though, that the movie felt like an extended live action Scooby Doo episode.

Every year, starting in August, my best friend and I enjoy a weekly horror film to get us in the mood for Halloween -- we call it the Cavalcade of Filmic Horrors (CoFH, pronounced "cough," for short). This year we watched a number of old Universal classics, I Walked with a Zombie, and some older David Cronenberg films. We always watch John Carpenter's original Halloween on Halloween.

We just put up our Halloween movie list. I know I left some out. Still adding to it.

My very first horror movie was the original Tales from the Crypt
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069341/ based on the comic book series.
Now that was a great comic book adaptation. Scared the be-jesus out of me.

Here's one of the scenes.

I've been addicted to horror movies ever since.

I just saw the new Halloween remake by Rob Zombie. I have to say I was disappointed. It could have been a great horror flick but it just didn't quite seem to reach its potential. At least i didn't think so anyway.

I love Vincent Price so his stuff always end up on my list:

The Tingler
House on Haunted Hill
Tales of Terror

Non-VP movies include:

The Brain That Wouldn't Die
Carnival of Souls
Don't Look Now
Tha Haunting of Julia
Dracula

Oh, I could go on and on...

Busy day yesterday so I only got to watch a bit of THE WEREWOLF and HOUSE OF USHER on TCM and then I caught FRIGHT NIGHT on cable a bit later on. If I'd had the time to do so here's the five I would have watched yesterday:

RE-ANIMATOR
DAWN OF THE DEAD (Original Recipe)
NIGHT OF THE CREEPS
EL CONDE DRACULA (Lee, Kinski & Franco!)
ZOMBIE

I love HALLOWEEN, PHANTASM, DEMONS, PIECES, HELLRAISER and GATES OF HELL but I saw all of them on the big screen this weekend at a 24 horror marathon in Philly.

I love seeing Night of the Creeps on people's lists... it's a very underrated movie that for some reason gets overlooked all the time. It's gory, scary, and very funny... and if you have a problem with Tom Atkins in Halloween 3 then watch this flick, his hardboiled performance will leave you screaming like banshees.

No hating on Halloween 4! The scene with Dr Loomis catching a ride with the crazy preacher is great.
